Bad Back- Problems following facet joint injections

Postby Iceskatemum » Mon Mar 18, 2013 11:48 pm

Long story short......went to pain clinic about a month ago to see if Dr had any advice about FM. Have also history of bad back & had been in the past to same clinic for it. My back has also been sore and so in the course of the conversation about my pain he discussed having some facet joint injections for it . Had these and spinal epidurals in the past and they have eased the pain from my back for differing amounts of time, so I agreed.

He also then discussed and recommended changes in my FM meds.

Pain relief from the injections lasted a couple of weeks but as they wore off I was in really bad pain from around the facet joint area,(A new area for pain) my back would cease and I would have horrendous pain (like a sword was being forced into my back ) as I tried to get up from a sitting position and my leg would go from under me.

Been to the GP surgery last week & the new youngish GP seemed was more interested in my FM pain & suitability of meds ( Pain clinic recommendation not fully sucessful ) than the actual back pain although he did say the new med regime he advised should help it.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had these injections and if they have any experience of any post injection difficulties.

Have had to be help to move around house by my OH over the last few days so am going to ring the Pain clinic in the morning for advice ( been a holiday weekend here ) to see what could be causing this. Really can't cope with yet another bit of my body giving up

Sorry to hear that you are having extra pain. The Dr that did the injections should be able to give you answers. It sounds like it could be a pinched or inflammation in the nerve. Let us know how you get on
please.

Thanks Tony , will see how it progress' am just about to ring the consultants secretary and see what she says I should do . Hopefully go back up to see him, problem is like most things it comes & goes...... if I was a betting person I guess it wouldn't be to bad the morning /afternoon I am menat to go see him again anyway!

Hope you keeping well Tony .

Thanks for your good wishes as well Whoami. Have to say that's the conclusion I 'm starting to reach but then thought it should be away after a monthhowever given I was using it anyway for the first 2 weeks while the spinal injection did its thing I guess I must have increased the inflamation.
Will let you know how I get on Whoami as I appreciate quite on the forum have bad back as well as FM so its all useful background stuff.

Take care

ISM,
Have you had an MRI scan of the affected area of your back? I had steroid/pain killing facet joint injections before I had to have the spinal fusion. This was only done as a result of the pinched nerves being visualised on MRI and was under radiological guidance, actually like an operation in itself. I had quite good pain relief for quite a while after them. I even asked if I couldn't have another before going down the op route but consultant said that it was always only a temporary cure and as I had had them twice on both sides then the op was only choice eventually.
I do agree with Tony though, that it takes those of us with FM even longer to recover from debilitating pain, as it's now nearly 4 weeks since my op and I still feel 'wiped-out'. I do think a lot of the numbness has been stopped though, so worth having it in the long run.
Hope you get some sort of resolution from your back pain. Fibro is bad enough on it's own, without us having arthritis etc to contend with too.. ;-) ((Hugs))

Thanks Countryfan, had a word with a specialist nurse at the clinic (duh didn't realise they had an emergency help nos, could have chatted about this ages ago ) she is going to see if the consultant will up my meds and/or give me a med for muscle spasm , if consultant want to see me then she can also arrange new urgent appointment.
She was also a mine of information on facilities for FM, seems there is someone nearby who has a swimming pool & then allows a trained physio use it one night a week and she does various pool exercises to help with stamina etc. The local MP pays for the insurance they need to open it as a group facility . Sounds good as I had to stop my walking in the pool as it was too cold and I went into muscle spasm & I flared up !

Will let you know how I get on.

Hi ISM

Thought you may be struggling as haven't seen you on here much lately.

I've never had any back problems but both my mum and my sister have so I know how painful and debilitating it can be. Just wanted to post to let you know I'm thinking of you!
What doesn't kill you will only make you stronger ;-)
