swelling and pain with feet

Postby penfriend » Thu Apr 17, 2014 5:38 pm

Dear friends, As my hands swelled up and were very painful last year, I am also wondering now whether my feet swelling and pain is also due to fibromyalgia. I did see a specialist last year, and he said my hands were due to fibromyalgia. I did wear hand-supports for a long time, and thought I would have to give up typing completely, but there was some gradual improvement and now am typing again. I know that doctors would most probably prescribe a duretic, but that robs the body of potassium, so have been using dandelion tea, which does not, but there is no improvement in my feet. Anyone got any thoughts on this? Thanks. sincerely, penfriend

Hello,

Do you swollen feet indent when you push your finger in leaving a dent? If so, you could probably do with a diuretic. Your doctor could prescribe one that contains potassium (K) if needed. If there is no indent then perhaps try a calcium/magnesium with Vit D supplement to support your muscles, tendons and bones. :-)

I went to my GP with swollen painfull ankles/feet and she done the pressing test. It wasnt fluid retention as thought but Angeodemia  this actually linked up with the hives i have. I get facial swelling also and dint know it could effect the feet. Just another possibility.

So im on anti-histmines although they dont work

Hi All,

I also get very painful feet, especially my left heel is very painful, possibly 'Plantar Faciitis', and this is one of the many symptoms of Fibro. My feet and ankles have been a bit puffy lately too even though it is not that warm yet, I live in Spain, but I have just started on Targin, so it could be this. I will be seeing my doctor next week anyway about these as it was a trial. I also have painful hands and fingers/thumbs and had this since the start. Sometimes I can barely pick a kids plastic beaker up.

There are so many different signs and symptoms to this horrible illness. I was diagnosed in the Winter of 1999/2000 and since then had only quite mild flares, different areas at different times, but since I hurt my back last September I have had a major flare and it is affecting everywhere and everything. I was hoping that once we start getting the warmer weather here,( Yes we do get cold damp Winters here too), it may improve, but it has not yet. In fact some things are worse. Unfortunately, my hubby doesn't really understand the illness either, which does not help. Anyway, gentle hugs to you all and keep positive :-?

If you're considering adding supplements, alternative treatments/remedies to your current cocktail, please seek advice from a suitably qualified professional before you start taking something.

Altho vitamins etc are necessary part of what we need to stay healthy, they can still cause problems and interact with meds etc, often with very unpleasant effects.

Taking 3,700mg or less of potassium supplements a day is unlikely to cause any harm, but if too much is taken, it can cause stomach pain, nausea and diarrhoea.

The recommend daily amount of calcium for an adult is around 700mg. Taking high doses of calcium (over 1500mg a day) could lead to stomach pain and diarrhoea.

The levels of magnesium needed are 300mg a day for men and 270mg a day for women. Taking high doses of magnesium (more than 400mg) for a short time can cause diarrhoea. There is not enough evidence to say what the effects might be of taking high doses of magnesium for a long time.

With vitamin D supplements, not more than 25 micrograms (0.025mg) a day should be taken, as it could be harmful. Taking too many vitamin D supplements over a long period of time can cause more calcium to be absorbed than can be excreted. This excess calcium can be deposited in and damage the kidneys. Excessive intake of vitamin D can also encourage calcium to be removed from bones, which can soften and weaken them.

Dear friends, So grateful for all the replies to my question on swollen feet and also knees, I did press into my ankle and it left a deep depression, so it does seem I need a stronger duretic then. I did not know there was one which also contains potassium, as I would need that. I already take Calcium/magnesium with Vit.D. Since writing last, once in necessity, I tried to "walk" a few steps to a toilet for the disabled, and my legs were so very painful and I could not bear the pain. It has been since then that my knees have been so very swollen and painful, despite two months of much rest and having to use indoor powered wheelchair. I also have an irregular heart beat, which is usually controlled by Verapamil but has got worse, so am watching that. It is one day at a time.

Could you have arthritis? I ask because the first symptom I had was a very swollen, red hot knee. The second symptom was a month later, swollen sausage toes, red and hot again. I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. That was last year. I was diagnosed with fibro this year. My feet I notice so swell up in the heat when I am on them too long but I don't know which one is causing which!
I am a fibro fighter not a fibro sufferer. I will keep fighting from the minute I get up til the minute I go to bed.
