Can an abnormal EMG be Fibromyagia?

Postby Peanuts » Tue Feb 24, 2015 8:03 pm

So after being past around for 15 months to various consultants won't bore you with the details. I was told in September time I had Fibromyagia with CFS. Was feeling ok with the diagnosis and coming to terms with it.
That was until I had a follow up with my neurologist at the start of December and was told I had abnormal EMG findings and that he was sure this was a muscular disorder and not Fibro/CFS. Bombshell!

Since Dec I have had various tests and landed in hospital for a few days as my shortness of breath became worse. This obviously speeded tests up including a muscle biopsy.

Anyway long story short I had my follow up from the tests today. The biopsy and various blood tests were completely normal which has left him at a dead end. The only thing that was abnormal was my lung diaphragm muscular tests. It's wasn't completly abnormal but showed that I have a diaphram weakness on excersion but was a bit inconclusive as it seems only the case when on excersion.

So today he has said he's unsure and passed me onto a neuromuscular consultant for further tests.

My question is could it be that it is Fibromyagia all along and Fibro is what was showing in the EMG, I did ask the consultant this of which the answer was inconclusive swaying towards no but not a definite no more of a wait and see what the neuromuscular consultant says :)

WebMD can explain it better than me http://www.webmd.com/brain/electromyogr ... on-studies

Its a bit like having acupuncture except the needles send electrical currents , if your ever used a tens machine its just like having that turned up on a silly high setting.

Thank you, I can't really find a definitive response to my question anywhere. Just conflicting answers round the web, Ive read that mostly fibro won't show in an EMG but a few responses that have conflicted that which has left me feeling confused.
The waiting is driving me crazy and I'm left feeling very confused by various drs .

I have a feeling the neuro muscular consultant is going to send me back down the Fibro/ME path after waiting maybe a year for my appointment (from what i can tell there is one neuro muscular consultant to cover the whole of bristol and surrounding areas, adults and children, I've heard horror stories of people waiting two years!!) and maybe longer to rule out further rare disorders.
Would love some kind of indication but still waiting for the referral to come through.

Was a lot calmer when I was in the fibre/ME diagnosis and knew that the pain i was feeling had no underlying cause, it refused a lot of anxiety and i was learning to manage it. I had a clinic and people who could relate to how I was feeling. Now I feel like I've been yanked out and shoved back in the scary limbo land with no support and no indication on when I will be back to the land of the diagnosed which at least offers some hope or at least a shared understanding.
