Postby joanypops » Fri Oct 03, 2008 4:01 pm

Hi everyone just need a bit of advice. Im going to the pain clinic next week to see the consultant because i have a few new symptoms the nurse wasnt happy about. I have started to get a lot of pain lately down the side of my face, it starts around my eye across my cheekbone down and into my teeth !!!!! I just thought it was fibro but my hubby has been nagging me to write this post to see if anyone else gets this. Im sure you all do but i hope someone can put his mind at rest bless him. :P

I get these sorts of pains, been told they are connected to teeth grinding (bruxism) and TMJ (a joint disfunction of the jaw). I also get pains going into my ear which is also connected to the TMJ.

Hi,

There is also a condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia which involves the nerve that runs down the side of your face. It can be VERY painful at times & cause shooting pains just from touching your face, mouth or even teeth. If you do a search on it then you will find plenty of info so you can see if it sounds like the problems you've been having.

I have suspected TMJ and I'm waiting a referral to the specialist. I get the same symptoms as you.

TMJ is on of the things associated with fibro.

Forgot to say that I go every 3 or 4 months to the Dept of Clinical Neurology at Edinburgh's Western General for a botox injection into the worst affected muscle and it works wonders - I can actually talk without taking lumps out of my tongue (For me TMJ brought a whole new meaning to the phrase "I had to bite my tongue"). It also means I can eat reasonably proper food until it starts wearing off again.

Apparently not every Doctor is happy about letting you get it (still seen as a bit experimental) and it is usually as the last resort - I just kept pushing for a referral. I think the clincher was while I was in at my Doc my jaw clamped shut suddenly while I was talking and it took several minutes for the muscles to relax again enough to open my mouth again, by which time I was in tears with the pain

once again this forum has eased my mind a bit. I will have to ask my doc of course but my jaw has been "clicking" when chewing or talking down the right side of my face. does this sound familiar to anyone?

The clicking sounds like it could be TMJ, yes. You can also see your dentist about it, that's how I got my referral.

yes i am the same i suffer from chronic face pain in the right hand side, mostly, but does happen on both, i get very aggrivated with my hearing it becomes very acute in the days before an attack, also i get severe migraine pain from it, and a ice pack frozen does seem to help sometimes.
I also get pain in my eyes and cheekbones, i find that when i am drive a lot it gets worse, dentist advised me to put my tongue between my teeth whilst driving lol. it sometimes has helped.try using an electric toothbrish too this does seem to help too by not widening my jaw too much.

Hi I suffer from pain just as you describe and also get earache and dizziness most days. I've been dx'd with TMJD and was put on ami to help with the pain and dizziness and I think it takes the edge off it. I also suffer what I've always thought to be migraines but now find out they could be TMJ headaches. I was on a no chew diet for about 4 months when I was under the max fax dr, but that did no good. I do grind a lot at night which aggrevates it (tried a bit guard from the dentist but just gagged on it and spat it out in my sleep. Haven't found any sure fire ways to get rid of it but just concentrate on relaxing my jaw when I'm stressed or in pain.
