GABAPENTIN v PREGABLIN

Postby Salgor » Fri May 04, 2012 1:27 pm

I've gained quite a lot of weight since being on Gabapentin (can't really afford to do that - roly poly comes to mind :yikes: ). I have spoken to my doctor and she suggests that I try Pregablin instead. Has anyone had a similar experience, and has switching drugs had a positive effect.?

I go back to hospital consultant on 18th of this month and he will go over the results of the blood tests he took.

I went from gabapentin to pregablin and put even more weight on, so much so that I am now pre diabetic and am struggling with pain while coming off them . They did help the pain but the weight was awful :-?

So, really, it looks as though isn't a sheet of bronco between the two drugs. If I keep putting weight on I shall just have to come off them altogether and accept the consequences. I am also diabetic and cannot afford to pile the weight on. In fact, I am on a drug called Byetta which is intended to cut the appetite and help weight loss and at the moment it's effect is being cancelled out by the gabas.

Seems we just can't win. :-?

i'm sure you all know that gabapentin and pregabalin are anti-convulsants that help with pain. there is another one called carbamazapine that i used to take. some people report no weight gain, some weight loss and some weight gain but not as much as with the other 2 drugs.

Due to pregabalin being an expensive drug, my gp suggested I try the geb one, was screaming with pain by the end of the week and emergency doctor put me back on pregabalin. I can now remain on pregabalin for as long as the hospital prescribe it for me.

I don't gain weight but I also suffer from severe depression and anxiety attack. I can't eat for the fear of choking so have to be really encouraged to eat anything solid and have someone with me whilst I do so. Not that I'd suggest to anyone not to eat.

I do crave sugary things so most meals are a bowl of custard or trifle

GABAPENTIN v PREGABLIN

Postby shelleydwales » Thu May 17, 2012 6:33 am

GABA was the worst med I've had , put on weight, depressed, and severe mood swings.
Changed to pregabalin and now I'm much better in myself, I get terrible sugar /carb cravings but I've dealt with that by going low carb and have found the cravings have eased tremendously xx
