WORKING OR DISABILITY

Postby professor_cyrius » Fri Jul 06, 2012 6:02 pm

Hi
I have had Fibro for 3 years, I have always tried to work and up till this year managed it. I had a flare up at the end of Feb and was unable to walk properly for 3 weeks, so I had to give up work ( for that particular job). I have been out of work since. I got the Doc to issue me with a back to work note ( like a sicknote but is usually used to give you the all clear or used to state that you have to t\ake it easy). I gave this to the jobcentre to 1 explain why I had to leave work, 2 so the jobcentre could take my illness into account on my job searches ( as I had a flare up due to my hours changing which caused my sleeping patterns to change). I had a physical by the specialist and he has reccomended going onto anti depressants. What I want to know is, if I go onto anti Depressants how am I suppose to work?
The reason I ask is I already get fogged up ( anybody who suffers from this will know what I mean) and confused. I physically can't do anything to physical, but at the same time can't spend all day sat down, as I get too stiff and end up in pain and my knees cracking which really hurts. How can I work when I can't do anything physical or can't do anything that involves concerntration and with me being on Gabpentin 3x 300mg ( this will be increased by 1 or 2 tabs a day on recomendation of my specialist) and Hydroxyzine hydrochloride 1x 25mg, if I then go onto Fluoxetine ( Prozac which the specialists also recommends) am I going to be able to work at all as surely I won't be able to do anything I'll just be a bumbling reck lol

The question is... why did your GP sign you fit for work, you obviously are not fit to work. I worked also with fibro (unknown) for 4 years finally losing my job last March, i have been unable to work since... good luck x

I so sympathise with you.

My career has always been important to me since leaving school and my late father raised me to have very strong work ethics.

I have never been out of work since leaving college at 18 and went straight back to work after the births of my two sons who are now 25 and 27.

After my ex husband left us in 1988 I was then the sole breadwinner. I refused to give up my home so worked up to 3 jobs to pay the mortgage etc, even doing early morning cleaning jobs.

For the past 12 years I have held a very prestigious position in the public sector and have enjoyed a very nice salary too. Many people here know that I was recently ill health retired (fighting for my pension) which has absolutely knocked me for six even though it was me that suggested to occy health that I was unable to effectively do my job anymore. Like so many people on here I am now on the benefits merry-go-round :yikes:

What I am trying to say is, blummin foggy brain   , there comes a time when some of us just can't manage to work anymore and it hurts, it's soul destroying but your health is worth so much more than punishing yourself trying to work when you are physicaly and mentaly unable to do.

I have no doubts that financially I may be in the poop but I am now just focusing on feeling better and taking care of myself.

Hope this helps a little.

Hi. I had my ESA assessment appeal on Monday. I explained that (like you) I cant move around too much, I cant sit too long and all the other problems I have with life, every single day. Even though I was awarded 6 extra points, making 12, Im still 3 short of the 15 needed. This upset me a great deal (and my daughter, who came with me) because I know working and doing what I have to do at home is too much.I struggle just to get through the day. Not only the pain, discomfort and other problems I have, who the hell is going to employ me with foogy brain and memory issues, which are my main symptoms.I refuse to be labelled "stupid" because Im not. I have an incurable illness with symptoms ( that I never asked for) that makes me that way. Just to satisfy my suspicions, I have looked through the jobs on the internet and local papers and there is NOTHING I could handle, for one reason or another. I rest my case.....

Thanks everyone for your support. The reason my GP signed me fit for work wass because I asked him too and because my GP was away on holiday, the new GP seemed to think that I wanted to be signed off and looked at me as a lazy lay about ( I think he doesn't know alot about Fibro and the fact that I'm male which is rare with this condition). I don't want to go onto disability and I don't even think I can go on disability, hence the reason for the question, how can I work when yes I can do a certain amount of physical work, somedays as good as most people and somedays I can do concerntrative work, but once I go onto the anti depresants how will they affect me and I'm worried that I'll become a dribbling wreck, as on my foggy days I can barely remember my name. I use to be a field research scientist, so my unique quality has gone, I've lost myself through this. The past 12 years I went into retail management as grants were cut back, but the past 2 years just done anything that comes along, so as you can see I've gone from a career in science and retail, to cleaning and warehouse work, that's some fall. I hope others never have to fall this far and I will stay positive, love to you all x

There's no way to definitely say how any anti~d, or in fact any med, will affect you as we all react so differently to the same med. Just out of noseyness, which anti~d have you been offered??? When used in trying to manage FM, they tend to be prescribed at a much lower dosage than when used as an anti~d, so maybe this could help settle you mind a little.

There may be some initial side effects, these could be with you a few days, or it may be a couple of weeks, it all depends on your body and how it reacts to the med. Any residual groggyness that you may experience afterwards, which isn't unusual for us, can also be managed by trying the med at different times until you find a point where you feel the most huu~mon.

WRT your position with working, or claiming benefits, maybe seeking some advice on the sort of things available for each option might be somewhere to start. Having plenty of info/research to help make a decision is never a bad thing, and would hopefully mean you do make the most suitable, appropriate decision for you.

hi fluffy
Fluoxetine is the one my specialist recommends, it's a form of prozac, the reason I worry is that I've already lost so much. My mental capacity, my love life ( as I can't see any woman in her right mind would want to take on this condition) and now my career. Isn't life fun lol ( no wonder I need anti depresants).

I think there are some members who are on fluoxetine, so maybe asking about how they have found things might be worth a try.

Looking at things from hopefully a realistic point of view and not making any assumptions about your abilities, work ethics, type of person that you are, with things how they are, it could be a while before you found yourself being offered a job. This period of time, if you were to try the fluoxetine, could be long enough for you work thru any side effects as well as iron out any potential dribbling~wreckness that you may find occurs.

It's understandable that you're worried, I've had very similar worries, as no doubt have most of us at some stage or 6 :pull-hair: :pull-hair: :scream-1: :scream-1: :too-upset: :too-upset: I know I've lost so much of what I wanted, hoped and dreamed I would as well as aspiring to, and it's only over the past few years that I've started to find and believe that new, different things can start to help fill the void that had opened up. Love~life wise, I know I've been very lucky with OH :blowkiss: :blowkiss: :blowkiss: :blowkiss: When it comes to someone prepared to take on something like FM, all I can say is that when I met OH I had a large estate car of problems that came with me. I wasn't looking for anything resembling a relationship at the time, but he had that special something (and still does) that meant he took me and my problems in his stride, and still does today as I'm not easy to live with. What I'm trying to say is that changing focus can sometimes bring about an answer or solution to a problem when you least expect it :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing:
