painkillers without morphine?

Postby helenfelen » Mon Jul 09, 2012 11:01 pm

Hi, this is my first post but I regularly read other peoples!
Has anyone ever been prescribed a painkiller without morphine in it?

I was on 30/500 co-codamol which always gave me stomach ache and made me itch really bad! the doctor recently changed me to Tramadol 50-100mg and separate paracetamol and 400mg ibuprofen, this is on top of 25 - 50mg of amytriptaline depending on pain levels at the time and to help me sleep and stop my muscles twitching, and also omeprazole for oesophagus reflux.

with the cocktail I am coping - just!

But.... the tramadol gives me the same reaction as the co-codamol - severe itching and stomach ache and the usual spaced out feeling! :hit1:

I think it's the morphine in them which i react mostly to but the docs are reluctant to discuss any other options (had to fight to change from co-codamol)

any help much appreciated! :grouphug:

had a very bad reaction to co codomal made me extremely hyper when i was in massive pain . my doc has now prescribes tanginact ,wow for a lot of people with fibro i think they are going to be a break through if you can get them prescribed . they are classed as a controlled drug i have to sign my life away to just get my prescription, unfortunately i think it is a postcode issue , my rhumatoligist said how have you managed to get these tabs when i cannot prescribe them as a specialist , if you have been on tramadol or something similar and felt totally zombied like i used to do ask your doc about these , they also i believe have some laxitive combined

Marinol, get yourself an understanding GP and ask if Marinol is available in your area and available on the NHS. I'm on this and it is the only thing that works. Once any painkiller has been taken for more than six weeks the body starts tonite become immune and they loose the effect and start causing pain ie reaction headaches, itchy skin, constapation to name a few. Oh by the way Marinol is the medical name for prescribed Cannabis all the THC but no smoke so no screwing up you're lungs, just spray it on your tongue :D

Hi helenfelen, firstly i just want to check when you say *morphine in it* i am guessing you mean a drug that doesnt contain an opiod/opiate?
I have read a lot about different medicines simply because i have tried everything from Codiene to Tramadol, Morphine and Fentanyl all of which are.
I personally also tried 2 different medicines: Gabapentin and Pregabalin they are both very similar. They are not an opiod/opiate class so you should not get the usual problems with stomach aches etc. But due to the way they work (which i wont go into detail about) they can take a little while to work and one is prescribed before the other generally. In the mean time or instead of, you could mention to the doctor about your side effects.
Both stomach pains and itching are very common problems with these class of medicines (opiods) However you can get an antihistamine to help with the itching and if the stomach pains are constipation related then laxatives are helpful. Of course it is completely up to you but if you do get good pain relief with the tramadol after trying any others then it could be something to look into.
I currently take co codamols and movicol to help my bowel issues, they work brilliantly and the stomach pains are down to a minimum.
Hope this helps a little there are also other anti depressants many Gp's believe can help with pain either off label or with the common depression that comes with FM.

Also, miller may i ask by *tanginact* do you mean *targinact* if so i am very surprised my GP told me oxycodone is only for people with kidney problems? Did you have many excuses and alternatives before being prescribed this medicine. I have seen so many posts with fellow sufferers saying its a brilliant medicine however my doctor is reluctant to prescribe anything other than fentanyl. :(

It is not cannabis as such it is the THC which is extracted from the plant, I certainly don't feel like I am becoming addicted to it and I only spray 10mg 3 times a day. Its each to their own if you can try it try it, as its not for everyone I've been taking it for 7months now and I have to admit that at first I did feel stoned(not unpleasantly) but once it gets into your system I find that day to day tasks do become significantly easier but that's not to say its a cure as I do feel tired still but not to the same extent

Since I've been diagnosed, I have only been prescribed those sort of painkillers! I was on tramadol at first, but it made me pass out! Now I'm on 30/500 Co-codamol, but I'm finding its effectiveness isn't all that great anymore!
Before that I was on Naproxen (worked ok for a while, but then only worked on my period pains), and meloxicam (didn't work all that well). Both worked ok at first, but because they are anti-inflammatories, they aren't really for fibro :/
