Tramadol and stomach pains

Postby sknowles456 » Wed Aug 08, 2012 10:08 am

I have been taking tramadol 50mg 2 x 4 times a day for the past 3 weeks. I have found that they are very helpful with the fibro pain but i have started to get slight pains in the top of my stomach as if the tablets are irritating the lining. Has anyone else found that tramadol irritates their stomach lining. Bit fed up coz they have really been helping but i will have to stop them if this continues.

Have you asked your GP for something to help protect your stomach from the effects of your meds?? I have lansoprzole, and omeprazole is another one I can recall being mentioned frequently. Might be an idea to see your GP about something so you can carry on with the Tramadol.

I already take the maximum dose of omeprazole. I recently gave up drinking and substituted it for diet coke. I am addicted and get through about 7 cans a day! so i am wondering if it is this that has been irritating my stomach. So i am gonna stop both the coke and the tramadol, give it a few days and reintroduce the tramadol to see if it is the coke!

It could be adding to things, I hope you'll be reducing things steadily rather than just stopping everything at once as effectively going "cold turkey" has it's own problems as well.

If there's no improvement, then consider seeing your GP about it as there could be something else causing the problem. Lisa, one of the mods, was having some problems and when she went to see her GP about them, it turned out she has an ulcer :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

Thanks Sarah, i will try quitting the coke, it will be good if it is the coke and not the tramadol as i am finding the tramadol really helpful. I will slowly come off the tramadol whilst i try my test.

I also have to take Lansoprazole on full dose. That much coke is not good for you and you should definitely reduce the amount you drink. I have to take over 15 tablets every day for various illnesses and I find it helps to take them with milk instead of water. I have chronic reflux and anyone who suffers with this will tell you one of the worst things to drink when your stomach is a bit acidy is water (or fizzy coke). Milk helps to line the stomach and also counteracts the acidity.

My OH suffers from reflux disease and was admitted to hospital with the pain a week ago, the specialist that treated him advised against drinking milk as it contains lactic acid, (it was the milk that caused the pain) and told him to drink water, I can only say that everyone is different and trial and error will eventually lead you to what is best for you. Hope you find a solution to your pain

I have been on Tramadol for over 5 years now and don't get stomach pains, but do get indigestion from time to time. It affects us all differently, but I would certainly suggest cutting down on the diet Coke as the sugar substitutes are a known irritant to stomach linings and taken in excess over long periods of time can also cause certain types of cancer according to the Cancer Research UK web site - hene the reason I gave it up 2 or 3 years ago

Until you can see your doctor to ask about Tramadol, you could try drinking plain water or lactose free milk (available in most supermarkets and same price as standard milk) will help to calm the lining of your tummy when it is inflamed.

As you get such good results from Tramadol, would it be worth asking for the slow release ones? I take 2 a day and they work brilliantly. I also use co codomol if I need extra pain relief.

Ended up in a and e with stomach pains and had lots of tests including xrays and bloods. Everything was fine and the doctor said it was either my stomach being a little irritated but no ulcer or chronic pancreatic pain from my acute pancreatitis 3 months ago. He then went on to say that some people feel more pain than others and alot of it is in the mind!!! I switched off at this point. So i am continuing with the tramadol, cutting down on the coke and trying not to get so stressed as that only makes the pain worse! Suzy x

I tried slow release generic tablets and found them useless plus I got stomach pain. My take is that the chalky pill is made so it's digests slowly in the gut.

So for me I would rather a capsule that soaks in quickly as opposed to something that's undigested for hours ? But it's only my opinion.

Coke is def bad for the stomach and I can usually tell a coke addict as they have dark circle below eyes!

Tramadol for me is keeping this huge monster of a pain at bay but I really think the tramadol has exaggerated my pain.

Forgot to say that taking Tramadol with food really helps. I did have duodenitis after a few months but after taking with food my stomach is fine x

Tram makes me not want to eat at all! :), nice side effect of not irritating my stomach :), Since stopping my bipolar meds (oh noes!) and switching my pain meds, I've lost 6KG (about 11lbs) Since the 1st of Aug :) (Quit the bipolar meds in june ish), But its took this long for my stomach wall to calm down. Must say tho, Tram and paracetamol (read they was Synergistic) work wonders!
