Change to medication: Tramadol, amitriptyline + citalopram

Postby lolo73 » Sun Mar 10, 2013 8:56 pm

After 15 years of suffering from FMS I finally got my diagnosis last week. The specialist decided I need amitriptyline and citalopram adding to my current meds which is Tramadol MR 100mgs x3 per day sometimes X4 a day, Arcoxia 60mgs once a day and Metformin 500mgs x3 a day (for polycystic ovarian syndrome).

On Friday night I took 10mgs of amitriptyline on top of 200mgs of Tramadol, that was around 6.30, by 7.30pm I was sound asleep and I didn't wake until 11am on Saturday morning. Saturday night I took 100mgs of Tramadol (so half my normal dose) and 10mgs of amitriptyline. I didn't sleep just so long but woke in terrible pain and I have stayed in pain all day.

My question is, is it worth continuing on the amitriptyline if I can't take as much Tramadol. Has anyone been in this situation? I have young kids who are heavily dependent on me, so can't really afford to be so out of it. My husband has taken on all the household chores this weekend but he works full time an hour + drive away, so he isn't around too much in the week. How do I move forward, will things get easier? :-?

i was on the same dose has you and was sleeping throu the night and having to wake up early with my alarm going of at 6.45am for the kids to get up i was so groggy and out of it somedays i didnt even bother getting the kids up for school, my hubby worked nights would come home at around 9.30am would find me in bed in tears as i was getting so upset and feeling like a bad mum, also the amitriptyline was causing side affect i had to come of them and now im just on tramadol and paracetamol, im in constant pain and feel tired all the time im very sensitive to medication and tried that many meds, my doctors sending me to the pain management clinic now, my hubby was made redundant in august so has now taken over has my carer so now my kids are getting up on time for school, wouldnt it be best for you to talk to your doctor about it hope everything works out for you hun :grouphug:

As you've only taken the amis for a couple of nights, and as they usually need about a month to fully get into your system and get used to them, what you've experienced may well be initial side effects that, as you get used to them, will hopefully start to ease off for you. You may also need a bit of twiddling about with the times you take your meds so that you get the right levels in your body for the time you want to go to bed.

Try giving it a bit more time and see how things go. Effects can be erratic at first, but as you get used to the med, they do tend to settle down.

If your dog doesn't like someone, then you probably shouldn't either

That is interesting, I will speak with my GP or pharmacist about the heart problems. The specialist wants me on 20mgs in a fortnight, we will see how I go on 10mgs. I have to wait for my GP to prescribe the citalopram, I am thinking I will be a Zombie on all those meds :!:

I take all 3 plus a cocktail of others, the symptoms all settle down and you soon get into a routine, it took me ages to get it right but now i have i feel a lot better. i havent heard about the heart problem link but will def be asking my doctor about it.
