Help With Gabapentin

Postby Moony » Sun Mar 17, 2013 12:03 am

Hi guys,

I went to the doctors on Wednesday (13th march) and she prescribed me gabapentin. I had to build it up at first- so on the first day I took one, on the second day I took two, and on the third day I took 3. Now I need to 3x300mg a day of it.

There is a positive to the meds- my pain has dulled somehwta! Instead of the pain being a 7/10 daily, it is now about a 4/10! However, the bad news is the side effects. Even after I had taken the first tablet they started. Here's what they are:

-I have a permanent headache
-I constantly feel a sick/hollow feeling in my stomach.
-I feel like I've just gotten off a playground roundabout i'm that dizzy.
-I'm spacing out even more and people have to prod me to get my attention.
-I just find that I'm not with it at all. Like I'm trapped in my own body. It's hard to explain, but I feel like there's me, then an empty space, and then my body.
-I have a numb tongue and dry mouth
-I get pains in my stomach.
-I'm really bloated and my stomach has really swelled.
-The worse thing though is that I feel very apathetic. It's not quite depression, more i'm just not bothered or interested in anything.
-I get random twitches in my muscles, especially my legs, arms and (strangely) my lips.

My family are starting to get a bit worried. My nana thought I'd come home completely hammered, even though I assured her that I hadn't been anywhere near any alcohol!
I know it takes some time for the meds to get fully into your system and the side effects might die down in a few days so I'm sticking with taking my dosage. But I don't quite know what to do! When should I go to my doctor if the side effects don't stop or lessen? Have any of you experience this? If so, did they die down for you?

I'm trying to put on a strong face for my family. I just feel that most conversations wrap around how i'm feeling. I'm going to have it rough trying to find a balance of medications that work for me, but it just feels so hard. I've been getting up and about and dressed, but today i've just stayed in my pajamas and tomorrow I just want to stay in bed. It sounds like I have depression but I don't- I'm just trying to adjust. And I don't want to say anything to my family about how bad I really feel; I am aware that that is a stupid plan and they are there to support me, but I just feel like I have already given them so much stress and worry.

I just..... aaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhh!

Any help, adevice, reassurance would be greatly appreciated beyond all belief.

Thanks guys,
~Moony

You have to weigh up whether you feel worse on medication or not .......my feelings are if they make me feel ill as well then I would rather not take them as its hard enough coping with the fybromyalgia without having to manage nasty side effects too..bless you do whats best for you its your body and you that has to manage your illness the best way that suits you

Hi Moony ...
I was on that as well had the same effects and it didn't go away after a month it's your body telling you not to take it there are other medications out there it's a trial and error thing and as you've had such fast reactions I would go back to doctors and tell her you want something different... something to help treat the pain without turning you into a zombie... I've was diagnosed with FM in the early 80's although I know I had symptoms much earlier than that...
I've had a variety different medications...some to treat FM some to treat depression and loads to treat the side effects of the medications at one point I was taking over 30 pills a day three quarters of these were different ... I'm now down to; 6 Tramadol a day, 6 Paracetamol, a stomach protector, and my HRT ...
It's your body and you have a say in what goes into it don't feel pressured into taking what's offered first off...is your doctor up to date with FM and have you been to see a specialist a Rhumatologist? as you can request that your seen by one to evaluate your pain situation and they know what's most current and working for people with FM... and what works for one person doesn't always work for the next... have you experienced people wanting you to try this and that because they know someone who also has FM and it's almost cure their's ?? we both know there isn't a cure or a quick fix its all about letting the flare ups run their course and in between trying to keep as fit and strong as possible once you loose your strength its so hard to get back any kind of fitness..
Good luck with your search you will get there and sounds like you have a wonderful family supporting you... and tell them how your really feeling they can't help you if they don't know... {{{HUGS}}} Karen :-)

:cow-wave: :cow-wave: Moony and :welcome: to the forum.

Just been reading thru your intro post as well as this one, so hopefully I might sound like I'm close to making sense :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing:

Gabapentin is often used in trying to manage FM and for some it can make a significant difference to how they feel. It takes time to fully build up in your system, this can be 4~6 weeks for you to feel it's potential max benefits. The dosage tends to be built up over a period of time, and that was what stood out as I was reading thru this.

What you have to bear in mind is that this is only very general info I've picked up over time. The dosage tends to to be increased gradually, over a period of weeks in a lot of cases. This tends to allow the person's body a good chance to get used to the increase and allow any potential side effects time to settle before the next change in dosage.

What you have described about how the Gabas are making you feel at the moment may well be side effects, plus with your dosage being increased over 3 days, the increased levels of the Gabas may well be increasing the intensity of side effects. They should start to ease back after a while, but I really don't know how long it could take.

IMO, if you are still feeling like you have described when your GP surgery reopens after the weekend, I would contact them to try and arrange to either see or speak to your GP (some GPs will do a consultation by phone) about how bad you are feeling, and if increasing the gabas over 3 days could be too quick for you to cope with. If your GP agrees that it could be, see about changing it to a longer period to see if it makes things feel a little less intense.

It can be a long and bumpy journey to find the right recipe of meds/treatments for you as quite a lot of trial and error, time and patience is needed to see if something will make a difference, but it is possible to get things more under control.

I'm not wanting to sound all mumsified at you, from my own experiences tho, I can definitely say that hiding/bottling up how you are really feeling isn't the best way to deal with things I'm afraid     I've been there and paid the rather extortionate entrance fee, then found it difficult to get back out again. I can understand why you don't want to cause your family any additional stress and worry, but after finally seeing what it actually put those close and important to me thru, as well as what I put myself thru, letting it out is by far the best thin to do.

If you don't want to share it with your family, tell us about it on here. If you've worries about who might see what you are saying, post on the Private: Members Only board as that can only be seen by members when they are logged in. Whatever you find yourself experiencing, thinking or feeling, there's a good chance someone else has gone thru a similar thing themselves, and there's usually someone not too far away to offer advice or support, or even just a few :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

Hi Moony,
as FluppyPuffy said, it takes time for these drugs to get into your system. I have been on these for three months (ish!), and I can honestly say they are great. My GP told me to increase very slowly up to 900Mg a day. I got to 600Mg a day and noticed a massive improvement in the pain. I went up to 900Mg as prescribed, but this seemed to completely remove the pain. As I couldn’t feel any pain, I didn’t know when I was doing too much (until the next day!!). With my GP’s agreement, I went back to 600Mg a day. I am now at the point where I feel the pain come on if I am overdoing things, so I can ease off. I get the dry mouth and throat, and feel tired and dizzy, but I accept these for the benefits I get. I would persevere, give the Gaba a chance. There is an alternative drug called Pregablin. I have not tried this, but apparently it is better tolerated. Good luck :-D :-D

Pregabalin is a very similar med to the gabas, and in a number of people, if the Gabas don't suit them then the Pregabalin quite often does.

It's good to hear that the Gabas are making a difference for you vmvseoa, sounds like you've got found a suitable balance for yourself with the dosage, activities and knowing when you're reaching what you are capable of without things going too far :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing:

hi moony how are you getting on with the side affects off the gabapentin? I hope they are not as severe now. If they are still bad i would go back to your docter and tell them about your bad side affects. I have just start them on Wednesday the only side affects i have had up to now are blurr vision, feeling dizzy at times, and a really dry mouth which I get that with amatrip but my docter said if i do get any bad side affects to get back to her. Maybe you might find pregabalin better for you. I have found that i can tollerate most meds i am on 125 mg of amitrip a night and i am on tramadol and acupam i am hoping to stop my acupam if the gabapentin eases my pain, and to lower my amitrip xx

Taking the edge of things is what the meds tend to do for a lot of us Ambercatgoddess

With Gabapentin and Pregabalin the dosage should generally be reduced over a period of time to try and minimise the withdrawal effects. I had a GP who just told me to stop taking the anti~d I was on at the time and as well as going thru the withdrawal period, the psychological effects of just stopping them took me another 6 months to get over.

Hi all
I have been to see the pain management team that have a specialism in fibro.....They have advised me to reduce my fentynol 25mcg
due to my age and the long term side effects ( increased risk of cancer) and start the Pregabalin.
To do this i need to withdraw from the fentynol i'm really not looking forward too :-?

Would anyone have had a similar change in drugs??
Im worried i will be in chronic pain if i stop the Fentynol patches?? please help

Thank you Cheekychick
