Amitriptyline

Postby kazza65 » Wed May 15, 2013 11:52 am

Were do i begin with this meds

Right i was put on these meds at a rate of 10mg per night which i didn't notice a thing with then, so they was up to 20mg and i started sleeping through the night with any wake ups. Feeling a little dazed then for an unknow reason the doctor put me up to 30mg which was ok.

Then last week i saw i differnet doctor at my g.p surgery and he up them to 50mg at night. Now i'm finding my weight is increasing, my clothes are getting tight , feeling sick all the bloody time and very moody. I was wondering if anybody else is feeling like this.

I'm going to stop takin these tablets all together because i can't cope with how i'm feeling at the minute.

I'm going to stick with the Pregablin at 200mg three times a day and mst 15mg twice a day and 30mg at night and oramorph as and when needed.

All i can see with the Amitriptyline is my weight is increasing and getting moody, feeling sick all the time, feeling bloated all the time, i'm having to force food down because i don't want to eat but i'm putting weight on and also a burning senation in my throat and sweating and my skin been klamy loads of the time when everybody freezing which i always complained about before these tablets also alway have a thirsty feeling and when i go to pee nothing happens until i force it out ....

These are the usual side effects of amitriptyline, but it sounds like you have been told to take too much. Fibro patients often need lower doses of drugs, and it 20mg worked for you then take that dose and sleep through. The dazed feeling often wears off after a while and you get the benefits without problematic side effects. I take 15mg [1 1/2 tablets], that helps with sleep, irritable bladder and depression. It helps with the pain for me. I also take gabapentin and that helps me feel more positive, more so than the amitriptylene. It is possible the doc wanted you to get the antidepressant effect of the amitriptyline but if it' making you feel worse then the dose is too high. Ask your doc to treat you like an intelligent adult and allow you to work out what dose suits you best. If you took 20mg and it helped you sleep, and the daze would probably wear off, I would think the weight gain would be minimal and manageable. But ultimately it is up to you to balance your meds in the best way, you just need a supportive doc to back you up. If you don't have that I feel for you, I'm lucky and mine is brilliant.

Amitriptyline can be a very useful drug to manage fibro, but like any drug it works differently at different doses for different people. Might be worth dropping back to 20mg and giving it another try?

Wishing you healing and gently hugs :-)

The reason he up my meds was because the rhemy doc said i could go up to 75mgs he asked what does i was on i said between 20mg and 30mg so he said right i'll up it to 75mg do it in 25mg does and see how you go.. So i'm gunna ring in the morning for an appointment and get them to put me back on 10mg and adjust as i feel comfortable and they can balls. It my body and i'll put in what i think and the rate i think i need.

Kazza....I can hear your frustration.

Please don't stop your medication abruptly, there are serious side effects in doing so. There are also if you lower or increase your dose too much.

Talk to your Dr about your concerns on the dose and have him recommend how much to increase or decrease at a time.....good luck.

Thats the thing with Fibro, everyone is different and I think because its something you can't see and the symptoms are so varied, the Docs have a job understanding our needs. I have just come off Amitriptyline after 5 years I put on loads of weight and my Husband said my personality changed. My Husband was made redundant then Mum passed away and my daughter left home to move in with her Boyfriend all within 12 months! I was put on them to help me cope with the pain. Since then I have been on a lot of medication which has'nt done one bit of good. So with having been a Chemists Dispenser I knew that I needed to come off these gradually, and until I did this, I did'nt know if I would be able to cope. Well up to press I have have been fine.....I have pain most days, sometimes quite distracting pain, but I am not fuzzy headed :yikes: every day! and its not going to beat me. I'm going to be in control of my pain, I'm not having the pain being in control of me!! I am losing a little weight which I put on with the medication and I feel far more like 'me' than for a long time. :-) Hope everything gets sorted. J.x

Sometimes I wonder if the more some docs learn, the more common sense they tend to lose     Whilst a specialist/consultant may suggest that a dosage could be increased to a particular level, it doesn't mean that it should be, esp if the patient is finding their current level helpful/effective :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Talking to your GP is the best thing to do. Re~iterate how much benefit you were getting on the 20mg dose and explain clearly that this is the level you want to stay on for now. Hopefully they will listen and help with getting it back to that suitable level :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed:

Hi, definately sounds like the doctor has put you on a too high doseage, this needs to be corrected, the lower the dose the better then build up to one that suits you best. I am fortunate to have a good doctor who only describes what is needed, then she will up it when necessary and too be honest most fibro suffers have different feeling each day, like yesterday I couldn't hardly move, then today all wasn't so bad except I had a pain down my left side. I think these forums are great because it helps us to look at other suffers conditions and feelings. We need to be positive because ahead of us (as theres no cure as yet) we are all going to have ups and downers. Just keep smiling lifes to short! Chris x :-D :-D

Please don't stop without seeing your Dr,I take 20mg am and 40mg pm,your Dr will work with you to find the right dose at the right time,my dose was buit through trial periods and eventually through monitoring with Dr levelled out at this dose for me.I foolishly stopped them at beginning and made myself really ill unable to go to the loo and made Irritable Bowel worse.

Hi everybody

Just been to see the doctor not the one i usually see because he his cutting his hour but the one i've seen this morning i really like so i'm going to try and see him regular.

I told him all about what had happened yesterday and that i had stopped taking them. " He said one days miss will not hurt me but i most not stop then with his consent like you all said.
I then, i told him that i had been quite happy on 20mg with the rare occassion going to 30mg so he agreed and gave me a script for 10mg to up and down as i needed.

He was really nice, and i'm told me that a scan i been booked and i will here shortly to look at my spine.

once again thank all, i still coming to term with fibro i'm hopefully joining the Wakefield Support group on Monday..
