Loss of appetite

Postby E-Bunny » Thu Jun 27, 2013 1:01 pm

Hi guys,

Since starting Lyrica i have noticed i am unable to eat much... At the moment i am eating 2 low fat yoghurts for lunch, nothing at brekky time, and a small meal in the evening. I am getting full so quickly its unbelievable !!

Is it the Lyrica or is it because my stomach is always swolen at the moment ? possibly restricting the amount i can eat ?

I am seeing my GP on Friday ( I hope ), so will be asking her about it. The pain and stiffness i am experiencing s getting worse and i am wondering if this is due to the lack of food i am able to eat !

Tina.....I hope your GP has some answers on your tummy issues, you need to find out.
I am also not able to tolerate much food in my stomach. I can manage 1 chicken strip, the kids eat 8, LoL
It is awkward when we eat out, the waitress asks if the food is ok. I get maybe 4 mouthfuls and I am done.
Could it be meds or just the fibro?

I am an excellent feed converter though. I am not losing weight. If I was a cow or pig they should clone me,LOL

Hi E bunny

I've read a few of your posts today regarding the problems you are having with your stomach. I agree with whoami and hope you can get some answers from your GP.

I was on Lyrica once (think I've posted to you about this before?? lol) and found I put on weight with it but wasn't eating any more than usual. It also didn't take my appetite away either.

I have found that since having FM my appetite is so up and down, some days I can't manage very much at all (along the same lines as Whoami) some days I can eat and eat and eat (oh and eat some more lol) though I try and keep to a stable varied diet.

I also have IBS and when that's flaring up and my stomach is swollen I find I have no appetite at all. But with all the meds we take it is important to try and eat something. I tend to stick to plain food like grilled chicken and veg. Even if it's just a few bites it's something and I find as lot of the time it can help settle my tummy too.

You mention about eating yoghurts? I think it's the Activia/Danone ones that have that bacteria which helps stomach digestion so may be worth trying those?

Hope you get some anwers soon
xx

If your dog doesn't like someone, then you probably shouldn't either

Thanks for the replies..

Yes i really do need to get my stomach sorted.. I am trying my best to work full time with the pain FM brings.. Today my arms are very stiff, and ohhhh so achey lol.. So also having to put up with a swollen, and at times painfull tummy, it is making it far harder to keep going !!

If i was a dog i would have been put down by now.. lol

FluffyPuffy I have a pup of my own.. He is completely stupid... but very caring when he knows im not at my best.. he even tells me when i am going to have a siezure tho he has never been trained to do so..

Tina....I can't believe I have forgotten to mention to you, I am so interested in your tummy and now I remember and it was only a few months ago, LOL I was telling hubby about your pain and he looked at me oddly. Then reminded me....how I could have forgotten is beyond me.

I sometimes get the horrific pain you describe. It gets so bad that you double over and it is like a contraction, almost feeling it get stronger then go away, only to return a minute or so later. I am in absolute tears and practically passing out.

It happened one night when hubby had called ambulance for something else (incision split open). This pain started just before the ambulance got here. Dr couldn't figure out what it was but in reality was dealing with an open pelvis.

I had earlier this spring a camera put down as well as up the other end, LOL For the pain we are talking about. I was worried about colon cancer because it goes hand in hand with my thyroid cancer. All clear of cancer.

I do have IBS as well as diverticulosis or diverticulitus ( one is infection in the pockets). The surgeon said it could be the fibro, IBS or diverticulosis. She really couldn't seperate the pain because it is present in all three basically at the same level.

Now I deal with it as it is. I try baths, hot water bottles etc. I can't take oral med for it as my stomach would bleed. Basically the only thing I can do is to get the anxiety under control, try to relax and like labour pains wait until they pass.

I am sorry I don't have a cure or remedy but I do realize the extent of your pain and tummy swelling. All you want to do is die and you think it is happening by torture!

I am also lactose intolerant, that also gives the same symptoms, bloating and severe pain.

I really hope your Dr can find exactly what is causing your pain,. You will be comfortable and maybe you will be helping others with a remedy. let's keep fingers crossed x

Thanks again for the replies,

My GP surgery only accepts emergancy appointments on a friday afternoon, so will have to fight fo an appointment when i ring at 1pm..

Unfortunatly i cannot have baths do to my epilepsy =( even showers are risky ( had a sz whislst having a shower.. All i knew was that i had woke up lying down in the bath with hell of alot of pain in my shoulder.. turns out i had managed to dislocate it when i had th sz lol )... So i will be buying lots of hot water bottles this weekend and a onesy pj so that i can stuff the hot water bottle in and keep me extra warm lol.

My appetite seems to be getting worse.. only ate 2 yoghurts at 10 am yesterday.. and nothing so far today... but i cant eat if im not hungry.. and i feel this has something to do with the fact my stomach is swollen yet again o.O

Well managed to get into see my GP... She has told me it is all because i am constipated ( total B****x as i am going as normal o.O )..

So prescribed me enough laxatives to keep the entire country pooping for a week lol.. Even though I am not constipated, I am trying the lax and have been since, and no change to the swelling of my stomach or the painfull cramps and appetite !!

She refuses to do anything re-my pain and looks like i am not going to get any real dx about my stomach  I am seeing my neurologist on the 15th.. Of which I will insist she contacts my GP and insists on a referral to a rhumatologist as this is not acceptable !! Even typing this is killing my arms grrrrr

Will keep you updated !

I am really worried about you and your tummy. I can't imagine the rhuemy or neurologist being able to find out about your tummy. Can you possibly see another GP. How about being referred to a gasterenterologist (spelling?) Tummy specialist.
I quite often need to take a mild laxative with stool softener. Medication, especially narcotics will make you constipated. If you get that severe pain I would be worried about a twist in the bowel, taking a laxative if your bowel was twisted can cause serious damage.
