Naproxen

Postby Sue1968 » Thu Dec 05, 2013 11:36 pm

Hi

Does anyone know if naproxen is available as an intravenous alternative, the reason is I'm having tmj arthroscopy on 3/1/14 and I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to take my meds orally, I take other tablets as well, but I was recently in hospital with the norovirus and was unable to take my medications for my fibromyalgia due to sickness, I was told they weren't available as iv but are there any other medications that I can take whilst in hospital? If not I'll just have to cope but I know I can't take oramoroh or codeine as I have a bad reaction, really need some help here

Thank you in advance for any advice

According to this there doesn't seem to be an IV version. It might be worth talking to your GP or pharmacist to see if there is something similar which comes in a liquid form, or if there is something that could be done with this, and some of your other meds if necessary, to make it easier to take.

Sue....try not to worry. Inform all Dr's about the meds you take.

Sue...Naproxen is a member of the NSAID family (aspirin). There are other drugs in this family that can be given by injectiono, Toradol for one.

The Dr's are not going to see you in pain. They will give you an alternative drug to Naproxen. As I have said before I have had many surgeries. And my pain. Was always under control.

Sue...When is your surgery? :hugs:

Re: Naproxen - an update

Postby Sue1968 » Sat May 17, 2014 12:57 am

Well I thought I'd do an update, I've lost 3 1/2 stone in 12 months, I have a new gasterenterologist who was very concerned about this so this week I had a camera into my stomach only to find out I've got 6 stomach ulcers and a very inflamed stomach........guess what caused it??? NAPROXEN. The only thing that seems to work for me I've been BANNED FROM BUYING over the counter and also as a repeat prescription, I'm not very happy as I wasn't told that the hospital consultant had done this and I had a fibro flare upon an already fibro flare.

Every one please take care when taking NSAIDs as my GP didn't know that this was happening to me.

Naproxen is very harsh on the stomach lining, which is why it is taken with or after food. It is also frequently prescribed with omeprazole or lansosprazole to protect the stomach.

Hi fallingtobits I had been taking the naproxen with food and never without as I was told of the issues, I just think the hospital might have just picked this out but they are not able to do an "over haul" of all my meds so before I left the hospital I phoned the pain clinic consultants secretary and I've got an appointment on Thursday to look at my meds and if neede to tweet them, even the GP is reluctant to change anything. I think it's not really the naproxen that has done this I think a combination of all the different meds I'm on and have been on over the years has actually caused this, and I also take lansoprezole and before that I took omeprazole so it's time to have this discussion with the consultant I think

But thank you for your advice very much appreciated

Hi sue. Naproxen never really bothered me, but I can feel codeines burning after I take them, especially at night. Sometimes I think we have so many symptoms doctors don't know where to start! Good luck with the consultant.

Hi folks

I've been to see the pain specialist been told NSAIDs don't work with fibromyalgia( in his opinion) and the sooner I can get on the pmp the better, until then I'm on the infusions every fortnight
