Champix

Postby drbeard » Wed Jan 08, 2014 9:09 am

Hi,
I hope this is in the right place! I was diagnosed with FMS in march.I was prescibed the drug champix (chantix in the US) to help me stop smoking, about four and half years ago, this drug works by blocking the nicotine receptors in your brain , during the time I was taking the drug, around five months, I suffered sleep problems, one of the drugs normal side effects. It maybe just coincidence, but since taking the drug (and quitting smoking) I have been suffering with FMS symptoms.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

In pain, but not smoking, Phil

Hi Phil

Well done on giving up smoking. I'm not a smoker myself but both my parents were until October last year and have both gone on to Champix tablets from their doctor to help them give up.

I asked my mum after reading your post and she hasn't experienced any unusual side effects from the tablets at all. May be worth speaking to the nurse/doctor who prescribed them to see if things are related at all?

Failing that your local pharmacy could probably help answer a few questions.

Hope that helps.

Sorry no, I gave up smoking years ago but never took anything to help me quit. My symptoms had nothing to do with quitting but maybe you are different, dont know how you would prove it though good luck with your research though

Hi,

I quit smoking 5 years ago, I didn't use champix though. I used every type of NRT. (Patches and the inhailator, then the gum)

My symptoms didn't really start until a couple of years after that when I had my appendix out, so I don't think it was a cause in my case.

Hello everyone
I have been a member of this site for over a year but this is my first posting. I couldn't believe my eyes when i read the opening post on Champix as this is EXACTLY what happened to me!!

I started Champix about four years ago. They certainly were effective in stopping me smoking but i had to stop taking them as they made me feel so ill - headaches and sickness. After stopping Champix, i developed stabbing pains in one shoulder, then the pain moved to my hands, then my feet.

Long story short.....GP and consultant were certain i had rheumatoid arthritis and i was treated with immune suppressing medication. Due to the medication giving me too many side effects and not doing a thing to reduce my symptoms, I was taken off it. By then i was even worse, off work and in so much pain and fatigue.

I eventually had a full body scan and MRI scans, which revealed no arthritis at all. I was diagnosed with FMS as i had all the symptoms plus pressure pint pain etc. this was about three years ago.

I have told every GP and specialist who i have seen that my problems started when i took Champix. Sadly, it has always been brushed off as simply a coincidence and nothing more has ever been done.

I have been convinced for four years that Champix is to blame for the start of my FMS. My life has changed beyond belief. I have had to give up a job i loved and become self employed to manage my condition along with being a mum of two. I have hardly any social life and spend my life taking tablets and longing for my bed.

Is there anyone else reading this who has taken Champix to stop smoking?? Can you link it to the start of your muscle aches and unrelenting pain? I really hope more people come forward. I am convinced Champix has done something permanent to my brain transmitters. I have discovered that Champix is also known as Wellbutrin in the USA and it is used there in higher doses as an anti depressant.

I am left wondering whether Wellbutrin could be the the answer to correcting my messed up brain chemistry as a result of taking Wellbutrin in Champix form and then stopping it abruptly. My symptoms started as soon as i stopped taking it. Not sure if they will prescribe Wellbutrin as an AD in the UK. Does anyone know? Does anyone take it? I am on 300mg of Venlafaxine and 50mg of amitriptyline, AD wise at present.

I shall watch this thread with interest as i have blaming Champix for years.
Best wishes

I have just done a quick internet search about Chantix causing fibromyalgia symptoms and came across this study on the first page of search results. It was only published this month:

http://www.ehealthme.com/ds/chantix/fib ... a+syndrome

I have not looked any deeper but there certainly does seem to be other people that blame Champix for the start of their symptoms.

Can anyone suggest a way forward for this? Is there anyone we could contact to help us explore this deeper? I know someone who set up a Facebook group for people who were born with missing fingers and toes, whose mothers had taken a certain drug when they were pregnant (not thalidomide but similar). They are now campaigning to get the drug manufacturer to accept blame and compensate. Is it worth contacting Brain Barr about this and / or setting up a Facebook group to do similar?

Thanks x

You could try putting a post on Brian's board and see what he he has to say regarding the matter.

I was prescribed them just over two years ago and only took them for 4 days as they made me feel very anxious. I remember T the time of being on them reading pages and pages about how Champix trigger off these people FMS. I'm not sure that it made a difference to me regarding fibro as I'm sure I started to get symptoms inAugust of that year. But it really rang alarm bells with me at the time

I have been diagnosed with fibro for 25 years. I have taken many different types of antidepressants over the years. For the past 7 or 8 years I have been taking wellbutrin. I have had no adverse side effects from taking wellbutrin. Along with wellbutrin I wear Fentanyl patches and have found the combination very helpful in making my life more tolerable.
