Is Gluten Sensitivity Causing Your Fibromyalgia?

Postby Ted_Hutchinson » Wed May 07, 2014 10:27 am

I'm starting this thread with this short You Tube Video as it explains how this Doctor is finding her Fibromyalgia patients respond to a gluten free diet.

For those here who are new to the idea that for some people Fibromyalgia may have have it's roots in food sensitivity Ray Medina has an earlier blog post setting out the basics.

I was reminded to post on the topic of Fibromyalgia and Gluten sensitivity from a link I had this morning to this post to a SWEDISH website

If you use Google Chrome the browser will translate it to English if you click the drop down menu, If you use a different browser you can drop the link into an online translator, Google Translate or Bing are good enough to make sense of the article.

LCHF is short for Low Carbohydrate High Fat diet which is very popular in Sweden after Dr Annika Dalhqvist promoted it as a way of controlling diabetes to enable a lower use of diabetic medications. Dr Dahlqvist suffered fibromylagia herself and it was this improvement in her own health that motivated her to recommend it to her patients which led to her suspension from her doctor's work and subsequently she won her appeal.

While a LCHF diet doesn't necessarily totally remove gluten from the diet it does seriously reduce the amount of Bread Cakes, Pasta Biscuits which are the main sources of gluten although obviously if you have Celiac Disease you'd have to be far more ruthless in your gluten elimination.

You may also want to learn more about the way Vitamin D deficiency is implicated in the TIGHT JUNCTIONS, inflammation and autoimmune conditions story. This paper provides the reasons for restoration of 25OHD levels to more than 30 ng/ml, and maintenance of serum 25OHD in that range given people with a more natural 50ng/ml level experience less pain that may be a more effective level.

That is very interesting. I found out about a year ago that I have a gluten intolerance/sensitivity. I found this out because I kept getting a hot itchy rash around my mouth when I ate food containing gluten. But I do wonder whether it is the cause of the fatigue and muscle pain too. I know that skin symptoms are a sign that there is inflammation in the body so it wouldn't really be a surprise to find it causes other problems too.

The only thing is that I have been on a gluten free diet since I found out I had an intolerance about a year ago. I didn't feel any different until recently. It is only in the past couple of months that I've started to feel a bit better - but I don't know if this is because of my diet or other changes I've made in my life (like cutting my hours at work). Would it really take about 10 months for the body to repair itself after eliminating gluten from the diet?

Interesting theory anyway...and it does seem to be that gluten/wheat intolerance (they aren't the same thing!) is more common now and research suggests that it can cause fibromyalgia type symptoms. Definitely worth trying a gluten free diet to see if it helps - might not work for everyone but it is reasonably easy to do now because there are so many gluten free products to choose from.

This is a very interesting thread but please dont put so many links, it is hard for some of us to read blocks of text and to absorb it fully so having so many links can become overwhelming

Yes it was.

After six years of trying to find out what was causing my problems (muscle pain, joint pain, fog, etc.) I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I also had chronic diabetes and ulcerative colitis.

I tried a low GL diet for my diabetes which actually worked and after six weeks my doctor took me off insulin for the first time in ten years - pass the message on to any type II diabetics you know. Not only that but it cleared up my colitis too. Looking for a reason, I found out that the symptoms of FM are almost identical to celiac disease - which none of the many specialists I had seen pointed out. I got tested but was cleared but I tried a gluten free diet anyway. Three weeks later all my aches and pains cleared up and so did my brain fog.
It turns out that I have what they call non celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) which has only been recognised in the last three years and your doctor may not be aware of it. Known symptoms of NCGS as are IBS, colitis, muscle pain, joint pain, confusion as well as many other problems and, like with me, it is often misdiagnosed as FM.

The upshot is that on a low GL gluten free diet my diabetes, colitis and fibromyalgia all went away. I am now asymptomatic and not taking any medication at all so I would recommend that anyone with FM who has not done so tries a gluten free diet for a month. It worked for me.
