Sumatriptan??

Postby Queenie_70 » Wed Oct 15, 2014 8:15 pm

Has anyone else been prescribed this for migraine pain? I have 100mg on onset and then up to three more in a 24 hour period if needed. I took one today, regretfully, fell asleep 20 minutes after taking it and woke up four hours later, still with a migraine. I told my doctor that it doesn't seem to do anything, but was, as usual, ignored. Am I taking it wrong??? When the migraine comes on I take one, 100mg tablet. My understanding is that it doesn't prevent them, but is supposed to stop, or reduce the contraction of the blood vessels that causes the migraine in the first place.

Between the medication for migraines, fibro and depression, does anyone else here feel like they rattle when they walk? Plus the term "Walking Dead," comes to mind and I am not referring to the TV series.

Finally, my new GP decided I only needed a two month extension on my sick note??? ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Just been for an eye test now being sent to see a specialist as I have pressure behind my eyes at a higher level than usual
I hope this is the cause of my headache xxxxx

Hi there, I suffer migraines as well and unfortunately Sumatriptan never helped me. I am now on Rizatriptan and they are an absolute god send. I am also on a tablet called Pizotifen which decreases the amount of migraines and combined with the Amitriptyiline, touch wood I have not had a migraine for nearly 3 months now. I used to get up to anywhere between 6-8 a month. Maybe you should go back to the gp and ask about these tabs. I hope this help you and yes with what I'm on for the Fibro I feel like a rattling pill box lol. Have you had your eyes tested recently as this may be a contributing factor too. Hope you manage to get things sorted as soon as possible as I know how debilitating migraines can be. And on top of Fibro etc they are much harder to deal with xx

I take sumatriptin as and when I get migraines, but it doesn't work for my hubby, he sticks to iboprufen. If it's not working,I would stop taking it. Can I ask what other meds you are on? If you are taking a serotonin based anti depressant, then you can overdose on it taking sumatriptin. Also, tramadol caused me serious headaches?

Hi there,

Hope you're feeling a little better. I take sumatriptan for my migraines, I find that for them to work the migraine has to be well and truly established as if I take them too soon they don't work. As I'm on Prozac as well I have to omit Prozac when Ive taken these so it's only ever a last resort for me. I get 6-18 migraines a month and I'm not allowed to take analgesics which makes dealing with the fibro really difficult. My neuro feels that I've more chance of recovery if I don't but he doesn't have to live in constant pain :-( so I try to avoid the need to take sumatriptan at all.

Hi I was prescribed this didn't work was worse than rizatriptan told my dr i wasn't taking it any more and wanted my old meds back. she just didn't get it that after 4 hrs i was still in agony with a migraine and with rizatriptan it was 20 mins max mostly the odd occasion it didn't work. She just kept on saying that they work for longer than rizatriptan but they were rubbish for me.

Hi I suffer badly from migraines and take preventatives called Propranolol and Topiramate, it took a lot of trial and error with a lot of different medications to get the right medications and the right dosages. I used to get headaches and migraines everyday.
I take Sumatriptan Nasal Spray for my migraine pain. For me it works better than the tablet, goes straight into the system. worth a try? I have also used Sumatriptan injections in the past too, which are an absolute godsend if that is your preferred method (its like an epi pen).
Your GP can prescribe all of these methods. If your migraine makes you feel sick or makes you vomit they can also issue and anti-sickness medication such as cyclizine. Then of cause I have all of the other meds for all of my other conditions for fibro and that come with fibro!
Hope this helps. x

No problem I hope you manage to find a medication that works for you. It is a lot of trial and error with them. I have tried all the migraine medications out there including the injections. I found they interfered with my blood pressure. My migraines are exactly like yours. I get no warning then bang it's there and I am in bed for up to 36hrs but if I can catch it quick enough the Rizatriptan does help as well as sleep in a very dark room with no noise. Pizotifen is taken at night and there are varying doses it just takes tome to find the right dose. I am on the strongest dose it I have found it puts weight on me. I can't take propranolol due to my asthma but there are options available to you to help control the migraines. Take care and let is know how u get on x
