MRI scan appt - scared

Postby heffi » Sun Dec 28, 2014 10:53 am

Hello Fibro friends

I live in France, so things are a bit different here with regard to waiting lists (virtually none) and tests. If you need a blood test someone comes to your house the next day and does it, if you need to see a specialist the Doc phones and makes the appointment for you while you are sitting there. I know, I am very lucky and so I feel a bit bad posting this question as many people are desperate for an MRI and have to wait ages.

I don't consider that I have a bad case of Fibro, in fact sometimes I wonder if I have it at all. I have all the sore trigger points and aches that move about, but they are niggles/mild pains rather than the excruciating pain I have seen described here and I'm easily tired. I have other symptoms too, in fact I made a list of about 50 and at some point or other I've had 30 or more of them.

I went to the Doctor before Christmas about my sinusitis and promised the OH I would mention all the small niggly things I'd been moaning about. One of these was a weird vision thing that had happened four or five times during the year - January, march and twice recently. Its very difficult to describe. Just for half an hour or so blurred vision down one side of field of vision, with no headache or pain. So like a migraine with no headache. After a thorough check over and dealing with other complaints, Doctor said she was sure it was nothing probably just migraine but only way to be sure was an MRI. Next thing I know she's on the phone and has made me an appointment. It's this week coming, which she says is not because its urgent but just because there is no waiting list.

So, now I've had stuff come abut getting a prescription for some dye to be injected and drinking lots of water..... I'm getting really scared. I don't want to do this. I don't get headaches much, though I did get weird sensations on outside of head which I've posted about before, they seem to have gone away for now. I don't know what to do, I really don't want stuff injected into me.

Hi heffi,

I think what they are injecting you with is basically a dye that will go through the body so that is shows on the MRI several things...blockages being the first. With blurred vision they will want to make sure that there is nothing preventing the ocular system getting the right messages. I wouldn't worry until there is something to worry about. I truly think the are just trying to eliminate, all possibilities...I have been fighting for a follow-up MRI for nearly a year now, so I am slightly envious that you are getting so well cared for, but that is a good thing.

Look after yourself, but remember that they have your best interests at heart which is why they are taking the time to do this.
Good luck and let us know what happens.

Hi Effi,
If you are feeling nervous, about having a MRI, Have a chat with your gp and they could give you a mild sedative to relax you. Honestly they're not that bad. I'm claustrophobic and I managed ok. Good luck! xx

I would try not to worry. As Queenie has said, it is simply a dye. I've had a dye injected for a kidney scan and it was just fine, with no after effects. It's good that they are being so thorough. As for the vision problem - I sometimes get migraine aura - flashing lights etc - and I don't get a headache afterwards. It usually lasts for about 30 minutes. It's called a silent migraine. I used to have very painful migraine headaches when I was younger, but now simply get the aura and this is quite common with older migraine sufferers.

Hope all goes well for you.

Thank you so much for your replies ad also the replies on facebook. I know I annoyed someone there because the treatment here is quicker than the uk, I only mentioned it to add the perspective that as far as the doc is concerned it's not urgent. I wish you could all have the level of care we get here, in the UK I was told it was all in my head, here they recognise fibro as a condition.

Anyway, back to the point. Thank you again. I am definitely going for the scan now - I was in two minds but everything people have said has reassured me.

Thanks.
