My neck is always worst - medication?

Postby tentimes » Thu Jan 13, 2011 2:59 pm

Hello :)

This is my first post, though I have been lurking for a while and reading the boards for information. I'm posting to see if anyone has any advice or stories to share that could help - so thanks in advance for posting :)

I have been suffering from this for over 2 years but only diagnosed a couple of months ago. Although I am in pain all over, my neck, just at the base of my skull, is always by far and away the worse. To date no pain medication has seemed to touch it. I have the odd good patch every few weeks where my medication does seem to have things covered - at most this lasts a week and I am very grateful when it happens. My neck is so so sore that it is like a constant toothache right at the base of my skull. It is infuriating and I can't stress enough how debilitating it is, though I expect you guys understand - constant pain just pulls you down and drains you of all energy.

To date I have tried the following:

Diclofenic, co-dydramol, tramadol, arthrotec, butrans, durogesic patches, acupan,

My current cocktail is: 25mcg Fentanyl patches (they work well, taking a good bit of the overall pain away, Cellebrex 200mg one daily (stomach probs - can't take any more), and I have just been prescribed acupan by the specialist, 1 tablet x 3 times a day,

I am convinced my pain is worse with the acupan, plus they make me feel weird. I am prepared to give them a while, but wonder if they should have started relieving pain straight away? The cellebrex does help too. But I am left with overall pain, which I can tolerate, plus the neck pain, which is gradually driving my mad. I wish someone could just inject something in my neck/skull and make it go away.

So what do people think? Any other experiences with acupan? I feel like I need something to take the neck pain away and I don't want to up the fentanyl any more as it will just have diminishing returns with higher side effects.

Thanks

I should have added: the Acupan is currently making me restless, sick (feeling) and (I think) increasing the pain. I also have co-dydramol which help with the pain, but currently out. I took an extra cellebrex just after I posted first time and it has reduced the neck/brain pain.

Have you thought about a back and neck massage, tried ibuprofen?

Mental stress and tension usually manifests itself around the shoulders and neck so maybe its not just the firbo causing this pain.

I appreciate you may not be able to cope with any of the above but from the advice from the veteran sufferes of the forum I am always going to be aware that not all aches and pains and random symptoms will always be fibro related even though its so easy to put them down to the fibro every time.

Also just read your post again, toothache is known to also radiate from trapped nerves in the back due to tense muscles, I would say get as hands on as possible with your muscles on your back and neck, how about a soak in a hot bath?

 and :welcome: Sorry to hear you've recently been dx'd with Fibro. It can take a while for the meds to get into your system and start taking effect. It can also take a while to find the right combination of meds that are right for you as well, as what may work for one of us may not work for another. As you haven't said how long you've been on the various meds, it's difficult to say if what you're going thru with them could be due to side effects. If you've been taking them for a while, it's possible that they might not be the right mix for you, which if this is the case, then you might be better seeing your GP or consultant about something that might suit you better.

There's lots of info on here which you might find helpful, anything you want to know, just ask and we'll do what we can to help you :hugs: :hugs: :hugs: :hugs:

hi tentimes,

the reason I mention the massage is because I have always managed to prevent migraines and relieve my back and neck pain giving myself a quick massage, and i used to get my partners to crawl up my back to release it which always felt fantastic after.

The headaches and toothaches were a tell tell sign that I was getting tight. In june I was left with a TMJ disorder and became very aware of how seemingly unstressful situations were actually stressing me out, for example a car that sits on the 3rd lane of motorway and will not pull back because they are unaware of whats going on, now after probably covering between 500,000 and a million miles driving in my time would not actualyy bother me or so I thought. Now I am much more aware of my body I feel my face tightening up and I know im getting annoyed or a bit wound up wth something. Before I was aware that stress would just continue to tighten me up until i could get it physically released.

So when I say stress I am not refering to obvious stress but a collection of tiny little stresses that in your mind you are shrugging off, but in reality your storing it in your neck and back muscles, I also believe that when your lower back hurts that the stresses are more emotionally related (I have terrible lower back muscle pain but not sure which emotional stress i need to focus on).

I have made a thread about shakti mats or tantra mats as someone else found it called, the mat has the same effect as having someone on my back withouth the risk of me damaging my spine I guess, it has the same effect as the hot and cold applied, you just need to get used to the pain of the spikes initially and also after having a massage.

Hope your treatments help

hi tentimes,

i have a horrendous time with my neck as well. after a scan i found out i have spondylosis, a bulging disc and nerve compression. it is worse than any of my other pain and responds less well to painkillers.

massage makes all of my fibro pain worse, seeing a chiropractor didn't help neither did accupuncture. all the doctors i have seen can't offer me anything other than painkillers. heat helps. i now can't wash my hair or clean the house or much else because of my neck pain.

i wish you luck in finding something that helps you, all the best, adele xx

Hi there, and welcome to the forum,

i have a LOT of pain where you are describing in your neck/skull and it is by far the worst part of my pain.

i do carry a lot of tension and stress there though (my sister is trained in aromatherpy massage and she said she could massage me for weeks on end and still be able to do more work on me to loosen me up, so that is why i get a lot of pain there...

ive notced that i also clench my teeth because of the pain (i dont grind them like a lot of other people on here, just squeeze them tgether) and i find that the pain can travel from my jaw, ears and neck/skull, so thats something to think bout too

i take tramadol and duloxetine and nothing works for the next, i can be vritually pain free everywhere, and still have excruciating neck pain

i use a wheat bag/body wrap on a daily basis which just sooths it a bit...ive tried accupucture, and i can say that half of the time it helped, and half of the time it hindered my neck (always hekped my back)...i have massage too, but like i said im so tight at the pain point, it will take a hell of a lot of work to actually relieve me completely

i hope that helps...sorry for the long one

Hi

I have a really bad neck which gp said is tension. I searched the internet and found this exercise which has helped me alot. I found it extremely painful to start with but persevered with it. Now if tension starts to build up again i get on the floor and stretch my neck.

the exercise is called The clock and i got it from livesensible.com. i will try to post a link but not very good at this sort of thing
