Not sure whether to claim

Postby ninky » Fri Jan 20, 2012 12:06 am

I have had symptoms of Fibro for about 5 years. IBS for 15 years which can be incapacitating up to four times a week and now have to take loperimide on a daily basis. TMJ which was initially thought to be a burst ear drum until I was sent to a ENT specialist who diagnosed TMJ ( had dental work done last week and still suffering now). Migraines and ocular migraines for many years which can cause me to lose vision for and hour or so at a time. triggered by bright light.
Pain throughout my whole body and now have a resurgence of the Agrophobia I thought I had beaten (this was bought on initially by a unprovoked assault by a complete stranger 15 years ago).
Crackered most of the time and stiffness all day.
I live in a first floor maisonette and can't 'do' the stairs anymore without help. Can't use the bath un aided, can't do my shoes up anymore as i cannot bend due to the pain and have been banned from using the cooker since dropping two pans of boiling vegetables on the floor and scalding my feet. Have had numerous falls, broke my fingers falling and have become a regular at Minor Injuries unit.
Fuggy brain that makes me do odd things.Insomnia that requires sleeping tablets, though i am now trying Amiltryptiline for this. i take dihydrocodiene for pain.
I can't dress unaided and as i have degenerative changes to my left acromioclavicular joint in my shoulder, find it impossible to put jumpers, coats on and even do up my bra, even by doing it up at the front I cant bend my arms enough to get them through the holes. grrrr.
I also have, deep joy, Plantar fasciitis which makes putting my left foot to the floot unbearable.
I am lucky as i have a fantastic husband who cooks meals after working an 11 hour day and a friend who pops round several times a day to let my dog out for me and do shopping. The dog is a godsend as hubby has trained him to pick up things I drop and empty wash machine ect.
If i attempt to walk too far my ankles balloon up and i an in undescribable pain all the time.
Fingers so rubbish now i can't even cut my nails with nail clippers and no grip at all( the dog likes this as he eats whatever food I drop lol)
Now, i have got the claim pack but am having trouble filling it in. No local groups I can find to help.
Should I go ahead and claim. i have heard such horror stories i am not sure what to do.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks for taking time to read this.

Hi ninky,:-)
I would claim if I were you, include all the information of the way your disabilities are affecting you just like you have in your post.
Im sure that I have seen posts somewhere on the forum with links to downloads that explain how to fill the forms in.
I am sure that someone with more knowledge than me will reply soon! Good luck! :-) xx

It's definitely worth a go ninky, there are ones that are accepted at the first attempt :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed:

To give yourself the best chance, see if you have Citizens Advice, Welfare Rights or other similar organisations in your area and go and see them. They have advisers who know the system and will be able to advise you about completing the forms. They may even be able to help with their actual completion as well.

If your dog doesn't like someone, then you probably shouldn't either

Thanks for all your advice. I will attempt to fill in the forms myself, though it took me all afternoon yesterday just to complete a couple of pages.
I see they want the name of my consultant. Unfortunately I went to see him once and he wanted to put me on steroids to rule out Polymyalgia, even though the test had come back negative for that. I did explain to him that I lost my Mum through Cancer and she also had Behcets disease, she was on Steroids for it and her life was an absolute misery through them. My GP prescribed them for me a year ago and they flared my IBS up so badly I lost a stone and a half in a month so decided they were not for me. Now, because I refused to take the steroids and went home , the Consultant wrote a rather condescending letter to my GP and sent me a copy.I didn't go back to see him.
Will this go against me ?.
My GP has been wonderful, I am wondering if he will be contacted as he has a better insight into my condition than anyone else.
Have also looked for a group in the area to help fill in forms but cannot find one and I can't get to the CAB office as they are only open during the week when my husband is at work and, without him , I cannot get down the stairs.
I am just so frustrated as i used to climb mountains, take dogs on long walks and worked a full week and several nights as well. Why do they make you feel like you are begging?.
On the up side though, hubby fitting a grab rail next to the bed at the weekend, no more falling onto the bedside cabinet as i haul myself out of bed....hopefully lol.

Definitely claim. You really should try and get help from Welfare Rights, DIAL or the CAB if possible though - this will increase your chances of success.

If you do go it alone make sure you do your form slowly, get help from your DH. I'm waiting for the decision on mine but here's what I sent to the DWP;

- the form
- 6 pages of extended answers to the questions on the form
- 6,500 words on my day to day struggles per disability in my own words
- a letter from my parents who care for me explaining what help they give me
- 2 articles per disability
- medical letters from Rheumy's, neurologist's etc confirming my diagnoses etc

Make sure you answer the questions thoroughly. Give examples and reasons, so instead of saying 'I can't get out of bed because it hurts' say something like 'I need help from another person to get out of bed because my Fibromyalgia causes me to have very stiff muscles and joints in the morning. This means that I cannot physically move myself out of bed and I need someone else to lift me into a seated position, and to bring my legs around to the floor and to help me stand up and hold me until I can stand by myself'.

When you put down the details of your medical professionals it does ask how often you see that person. You can explain that you saw the specialist once to confirm the diagnosis but you are primarily cared for by your GP.

You can fill the form out online in a PDF file. I did this and found it much much easier. I'm banned from handwriting my by Hand Therapist because it's deforming my thumb so I explained that I was doing it by PDF for this reason, and because typing is less painful and less dangerous for me than handwriting. You can use the form as an example of how you have to pace yourself, say you've only been able to do it for occasional short periods (say 15-20 mins twice a day) over a month/6 weeks because any more than that is too painful and exhausting.

On the hard copy it'll have a return date on it (mine was 6 Jan). If you send it back by then they'll backdate it to the day you rang up and asked for the form so it's worth trying to fill in and send back a week before that. Doing it by PDD makes it easier to change any mistakes etc that you make on the form. And also guarantees it can be read if you have bad handwriting like me.

PDF form can be found half way down, click the link to apply online.

Thank You Lydalb.
I have telephoned the Consultants secretary and am in the process of getting a new appointment with him. This time I am going to write everything down so I don't get fuddled. I will explain to him more fully as to why I dont want to take steroids. if he insists, then i will go on them just to show to him how ill they make me. Not looking forward to it though.
Meanwhile, I shall ask my GP to send me for more xrays on my shoulders so that I can have a more up to date letter for DLA.
Have put the form in the drawer and not going to stress about it until I can make an appointment with CAB ( hubby says he will take time off work to take me Bless his heart)as I was getting very panicky about it all.Meanwhile, I am going to keep a diary about how my symptoms affect my day to day life.
I do appreciate all the kindness shown on here as I don't get out much now and can feel quite lonely sitting here day in day out on my own.
So, again, Thank You all x
