ESA AWARDED BUT NOT FOR FIBROMYALGIA - GRRRR

Postby sjc » Tue Jan 24, 2012 10:12 am

Hi there folks.....well anyway folks.....I used to be on income support for being disabled. Now they have completely transferred me onto Employment Support Allowance.....Luckily the jobcentre plus have put me into the support group, which is great.....BUT! this is not for fibromyalgia and my depression/anxiety disorder.....They have only put me into the support group due to having social problems as a result of my asperger syndrome.....

Now, fair enough, I do have problems with socialising as a result of having autism....But as you all know that fibromyalgia and depression is a debilitating condition, which causes significant issues with performing day to day activities.....So a little bit annoyed with the jobcentre not taking my other conditions into consideration, as they affect me just as must as my autism.....Obviously, I do not want to sound like I am moaning, as I am very grateful for being put onto the support group...I know some people will struggle even getting a benefit nowadays....

But I wish the jobcentre will taking fibromyalgia and depression more seriously....Anybody agree???? So just wondered, has anybody get ESA or put into the support group as a result of Fibromyalgia or Depression alone....and what reasons/criteria did you pass????

Have you considered the possibility that they considered your Aspergers Syndrome to be the main factor, with the FM and depression being more of secondary issues.

Personally, I was just relieved to be told I qualified for it, the reason they gave as my main qualifying factor was secondary.

i got moved onto esa support group mainly for fibro and depression then secondry they took into account ibs, arthritis, panic/anxiaty attacks, cfs and hyper mobility. although as others hav said i was just so happy that i wasnt being faced with havin to go out to work as i no its to much for me these days that as far as i was concerned they could of had any condition as my primary condition as long as they took on board the unable to work due to pain and i spend 3-4 days a week where i just continually sleep and need woken up just to eat then i carry on sleeping and if im bust at doctors when tierdness takes over i cant help but sleep in waitin room as my eyes just close and i just cant get them open again so this is also a very big part of why i can

these days u should just be greatful that u get benefits when u need them so many other people hav to fight for benefits with all the cutbacks things r getting so much harder aswell

I'm Dyspraxic with a very strong Aspergers and Dyscalculia overlap so this has given me hope for Saturday's medical.

I think the thing with developmental disorders like Aspergers, Dyspraxia and Dyslexia etc is that they affect simply everything about us. In my case my brain is wired up completely 'wrong', it therefore causes me a myriad of symptoms. I explained on my ESA and DLA forms that Dyspraxia affects my very being in ways my other conditions do not. I explained how I've always had Dyspraxia, the main problems it causes me in terms of concentration, memory, physical co-ordination, planning, getting around an unfamiliar place etc. But I also explained how much worse it is with Fibro now that I'm fatigued, in pain and have to deal with Fibro fog.

It's probably a good thing that they're treating your Aspergers as the worst condition, or the main condition - Aspergers isn't expected to change or go away. Technically the nature of Fibro means there's always a possibility that you'll experience time out of a flare with less symptoms, or that it could even go into remission for a while. Even though many of us have constant Fibro symptoms and don't seem to get more than the odd day or hour here and there which is a bit better the medical community (and ATOS and the DWP) are very aware that in some cases Fibro does go away for a while. They're more likely to constantly reassess someone with Fibro and similar illnesses than they are someone who has a condition which isn't likely to improve.

The main thing is that they're treating you seriously. Maybe the Aspergers was simply the straw that broke the camel's back - maybe they thought that after everything else, if you would struggle at interview, or to build rapport with work colleagues etc then that was the deciding factor as to why you couldn't work, on top of the Fibro and depression/anxiety.

I filled in my first ATOS form the other week and I'm dreading what's going to come back. When I was filling it in, it made me realise how "weird" Fibro seems to someone who doesn't have it or have experience of someone with it.

Some days I feel ok, have the energy to do things, feel happy and blimey almost normal.

But then some days I feel like poop. My joints don't move properly, all I want to do is sleep, I can't concentrate, my appetite either makes me so hungry I binge or so not hungry that I only have one meal a day.

I mentioned all of this on the form, but I can't help but think that it looks like I'm making half of it up!

Since the Health Advisor saw me at the Jobcentre, I've lost a very close family member and honestly its made me twice as bad as I was 6 months ago. My emotions are flying everywhere and I've been in so much pain that I've had my Amis upped to cover part of it. Sitting here I can't imagine what sort of state I'd be in if I wasn't on anti-depressants.

I'm dreading that I'll be denied ESA because I just don't look that bad, but I know if I was to work that it would make everything much worse.

I'm also dreading that if they do want to see me for an assessment, I'll have real trouble getting anywhere as I rely on public transport and traveling on my own to places I don't know does make me very nervous. I want to ask a friend if she can take me, but she's on maternity leave and usually chronically busy with her new baby.

You are entitled to ask for a home visit, you need your GP to be on board and explain to ATOS that you're not able to travel currently. You're not guaranteed one but it's worth a try.

If you don't get enough points from the medical you can appeal the decision until a month afterwards and they will continue to pay you at the assessment rate.

If you're struggling emotionally ask your GP if you can try Counselling. I'm 5 sessions in out of 7 with my Counsellor and it's really helped me think more positively about things.

Have you applied for DLA/are you getting DLA currently?

Hello folks. Thanks for your replies. I do appreciate what some of you say. Of course i am very happy and always grateful to have this benefit and to be put into the support. So please don't think i am being totally ungrateful. I know some of you have had issues with applying and getting benefits, so my sympathies with you. I just would like to know though is how do people get esa for fibromyalgia, and why cannot the dwp take all of your conditions into consideration instead of picking and choosing what they want. Has anybody been awarded a benefit just for fibromyalgia? Most people that i read about or know really do struggle getting disability benefit for fibromyalgia and similair conditions, which sounds a nightmare to those sufferers who trying to apply for a benefit. Take care folks. All the best. Xxx ps, again, please don't think i am moaning as i am not, as i get the feeling some of you are thinking i being ungrateful, which i am not. Thanks for understanding folks.
