NHS Problem I think

Postby gary who? » Fri Jan 18, 2013 7:15 pm

Hi all.
I'm still suffering with FM, but now a bigger problem arose.
On 15th December 2012 my back gave way completely and fell to the floor like a sack of potato's. I managed to reach my mobile phone and rang my son who was at his friends house 30 seconds away. He had a chuckle but realized how much pain I was in.
Still on the floor in agony I told him to try and move me,which he did very slowly. Got a small stool and managed to lean forward onto it leaning on my forearms. 2 hours went by so decided to call 999 for help as I in no way could move, even with cushions under my bad knees they were hurting too.

Paramedics arrived, assessed the situation, usual blood pressure and temperature. Told me that I needed to go in but then radioed another paramedic who said no hospital but take these 2 2mg of Diazepam and 2 15mg of codeine and bed rest,so off they went leaving me leaning on the stool.

Got z bed put up in lounge and lead on that eventually..
Long story short, paramedics were called out 2 times. My GP was made aware of my situation and put me on 5mg diazepam x2 with 30mg of codeine x2 four times a day.Now pain has worsened he prescribed me Morpine @5ml 4 times a day.Now on 3rd Jan 2013 and in excruciating pain rang a friend and said 'take me to a&e'. Got there, found a wheelchair, got to reception usual name, address and current problem. Got called after bout an hour and I asked if I could lie down so got me on a bed. Left me there for according to friend, 45 minutes. Told him to ask a nurse for some pain relief and came back with 20ml of morphine in a syringe. hours went by and I started to shiver along with teeth chattering I rang the buzzer to call a nurse. A different nurse turned up so I asked for a blanket and more pain relief, which I received. Hour later a consultant turns up, told him what happened, did a reflex test on left knee, great, did reflex on right knee and nothing, totally numb.

Then says go home lie down flat but take 20ml of morphine along with 2 5mg of diazepam. Before leaving the hospital
I asked for my discharge note and told I don't need one, my friend asked too and got told same thing.

Got home and rang doc to prescribe some morphine as consultant told to do so. Received 3 more bottles.
Took the dose as told to do so.
My son and another friend were with me. Now for the fun part
This is what I was told hour later.I KNEW NOTHING.

At this stage I was lying on the sofa. According to my son and friend my right arm dropped to the floor, breathing was very very slow, friend got really concerned, son started to cry and rang his friends mum who came straight over, friend was calling an ambulance. Friends mum put her hand in front of my face and I did'nt even blink, my face was stone cold too. I finally came round so did an ambulance. Did usual temp, blood pressure and diabetic test. After friends explaining everything the paramedic said that I had Sciatica and cant do nothing about it,just rest.
Am I right in some way saying I was mis-treated?

Still have back pain and numb right leg including the FM.

Any advice welcome.

I don't know anything about being mistreated as I'm not a medic of any kind but if you feel your treatment hasn't been what you should have expeceted there are ways to complain . You might want to contact someone from CAB about it when you are feeling better.

Good luck with everything

Not sure if I'd call it mistreatment but it certainly sounds like you didn't get enough attention or explanation of the morphine treatment. Morphine is a very powerful drug which causes extreme drowsiness & suppressed respirations if given too much.

I would contacct the PALS...Patient Advocacy Liaison Service at your local hospital. They are there to help with complaints or concerns & should be able to help you

Hope you feel better soon

I'm with Sharon on this. Where the hell has patient care gone these days.

I hope you get better real soon with your back. I have disc problems and arthritis in the spine plus else where so can sympathise with you where the pain is concerned.

It's a shame your son got so upset. My lads feel totally useless when I have the screaming abdabs... I collapse and go into shock with the pain. We wont call an ambulance because the fire crew come out instead as we don't have enough ambulances. Government cut backs..! :?: :dunno:

HI all.. Thank you for replying.
Received a letter to see an orthopaedic on feb 7th. Should I not be seeing a Rheumatologist due to having FM?
I have a friend who knows a specialist in local hospital....so hoping to 'push in' this week.. I will insist on a MRI tho.Below the knee is still numb. Will look at my medical notes too. ;-)

See what the orthopaedic specialist says, at least he will know if anything skeletal is amiss. You can always discuss your concerns with him/her and ask your GP to refer you to a rhumey if you're not happy. Take care and :goodluck1: on the 7th. X

Hi All..
Sorry i've not been on lately, under Morphine that wonderful drug.
Just an update on how things have been going.I don't mind anyone knowing my illnesses.
This is regarding my back problem which started Dec '12. I had an x-ray and am MRI. The MRI results were as follows....
The lowermost three lumbar discs are desiccated with annular disc bulges and accompanied by annular tears at L3-L4 and L4-L5.
The right lateral recess at L3-L4 are narrowed. The disc touches the traversing L3 nerve root. The gel inside disc seeps due to tears.
Walking is very limited to about 10 meters and thats the maximum I walk which is to my car in severe pain without medication to see my GP, the rest of the time I do not drive at all as I'm away with the fairies on medication.
This is what I had to put up with since 15th Dec '12.

Now for some GOOD news :-D with a bit of mmm what do I do.
I filled out a claim form for DLA in Feb this year just to see if I can get it for my back problem, long story short I got it at High rate Mobility and Middle rate Care. I believe this was because of my back and NOT fibro and depression.

I had an ATOS assesment in March and had a phonecall yesterday regarding this saying not to send anymore sick notes in for 12 month and that they are putting me in the WRAG. Is being in the wrag a good thing or bad as other sites saying its good but others saying bad :-? I'm just waiting on the letters to explain it all, thats if my brain can take it all in.
I did do a bit of reading last night after the Oramorph wore off and was again confused to what the difference between the WRAG and the SG (support group). How can they say that you are ill and can work on DLA when in the wrag, but if you're on ESA you are just ill and don't look for work and send in sick notes...this is way too confusing for me to take it all in.

Any help /advice would be appreciated.

Oh I feel every pain for you as I also had annualr tear in 1 disc and it was agony so don't know how you can bear it with 3. Took me nearly a year for the tear to "heal" enough that the pain subsides but sad to say mine hasn't gone away.
I also on DLA on HRM &MRC which I believe is also for my back as it didn't change after I dx with Fm. Was put into support ESA but wasn't told anything about not sending in sick notes.

I know people can get very cross about not getting into support ESA and I was extremely fortunate to do so but had resigned myself that if put in WRAG and I was sick then I would do as they say but if consultant and GP sign not fit for work notes what could they do . I couldn't physically work end off.

My be it me not knowing the system well enough but if you can't work and are in a group that says you can't work at the moment surely they have to accept sick notes !

Thanks for the reply Iceskatemum. Cat nap over yawn. The postman hasn't left me the dreaded brown envelope today so poss tomorrow. I will double check on the letter that I do not need to send in any sick notes, although this is what I was told yesterday,so not going to ring em til I'm certain, maybe I imagined it due to all the medication I am on lol. I guess I will ask to be moved to the support group instead of being in the wrag. I don't even mind if they put my money down. I just want them to realise that I am sick and NOT fit for work. The way this is going I'd rather be solely on ESA due to all the stress this is now causing me. I didn't ask to have 3 knackered discs, depression and fibro and shot knees and still look for a bloody job. Then again I can go to my meeting once a month drugged up on Oramorph with my friend taking care of me. How will they react to see me in that state I wonder? Will I be still be fit for work? I am housebound and will only go out to see my gp or consultant. I forgot to mention that I had a guided epidural last monday and it has no effect on the pain I am in.I guess I'm going to see my consultant again to arrange another epidural as this it what I was told to do. l will keep you informed as soon as I have any more info.

Hi Gary

You need to appeal, call the number on your ESA letter and tell them you want to appeal as you feel you should be in the support group, they will send you out a form to fill in. It wont affect your DLA. You have to be quick as you have a set time of 4 weeks. :goodluck1:

We have lots of info in the DWP, Working & Benefits section.

The wrag group means you are found to be fit for work and you have to attend work focus interviews.

The support is where you have been found to be unfit for any work, this could be for a limited time but there are two groups a contributions based one and non contributions. Here is a link on esa that should explain it.

Thanks shazq!

Now I understand.

To me the support group is like ESA....unfit for work. That's what I was on and sending in sick notes... Numpty comes to mind about DWP.

Hope to get the letter in the morning and go from there. I think I'm going to get some help on this matter i.e CAB or Welfare Rights oh and from this wonderful site ;-)

i have had chronic back pain for 20 yrs with 2 ops and numerous injections.

i was up into the WRAG and had to find work whilst attending meetings every 3 months, so I went to CAB where they have the criterias for the support group and WRAG.

They asked me a load of questions, and said no way i should be in WRAG, then she started the appeal off for me. Luckily i had a supportive GP and with his help as well managed to get put into support group.

I would get help and :goodluck1: with it all.

Gentle hugs

HI all.
Thanks clsmbenn.
I've made my mind up, I will appeal as soon as the letter arrives. I cant seem to grasp that I was on ESA for a reason and send in sick notes but yet they seem to know that I will be perfectly fit very soon and in a job. As I wrote in an earlier post I'd rather come off DLA and go back to ESA if possible just so I can stop worrying. It's so hard trying not to look worried also without my son finding out that I'm upset as this will put a strain on his college work, so smiles it is.

My GP in my eyes is not that helpful. I tried on two previous occasions to claim DLA and refused. Now my back gave way I told him (not asked) I've had enough and he needs to pull his finger out, which he did and the fact is I have a friend who accompanies me when I see my Gp incase he fobs me off, also I now record the conversations on my phone (without his knowledge and I don't care).

Truthfully I'm in a right mess with all this crap and its just turned 02:18am and I am bright awake due to the worry.

BUT I will fight this all the way!

Keep well
