Has anyone asked their doctor for:-

Postby wanda » Thu Jan 28, 2010 3:18 pm

Hello been researching all and sundry about Fibro
Has anyone ever asked their doctor to check B12 and Vit D Defficiency again !!
Has anyone ever asked to have MRI with head flat then second one with neck back at angle to check for cervical compression.

I only ask as from everything i have read and apart from trauma and various viruses this is the only other thing that makes sense.

Due at docs tomorrow and can honestly say that i dont want any drugs, i can manage the pain for now - for me the worst is dizziness, balance, neck, sore eyes and the ever constant LOUDNESS of everything that drives me crazy. When someone talks or the radio/tv is on sometimes its ok other times my heart starts racing my eyes go blurry and feel faint all because of the noise. Does anyone know what i can ask for to help with this
thanks W  :yikes:

When my GP refered me to my specialist, I had to have a whole lot of blood tests before they'd see me. I have had a CT scan which came back normal but I intend to asking for a MRI scan but I'm not sure they can see FM or related illnesses on brain scans, but I don't know. I want the MRI to rule out a brain tumour coz we have a stronge family history of brain tumours and I get scared.

Most of us have had more blood tests than we care to remember :? as far as I know B12 and D are included in the general tests they do.

I've had 3 MRI's but didn't know you had to have it done at different angles for compression to show up

I'd push to get vitamin D levels checked. Mine were very low and it can cause fatigue and muscle pains, not disimilar to some of the FM symptoms. My rheumy said (in some people....) it can mimick the symptoms of FM.

Hello everyone! Please fogive me for butting in again but recently I had been on various american websites ect and Vitamin D seems to be the current `buzz thing' in several of the states that are more northernly like the UK and don't recive as much sunshine in winter as the southern states. Some people have `found' the Holy Grail' of pain relife being exactly that - vit D deficiantcy and others who live in the Sourthern States have found this laughable! One person was quite upset and said that `this is this years fashion! There will be something else next year.'
I went and saw my mums GP whilest down here and he said that he'd read that Vit D can realy help - and he takes hand fulls of them himself -bully for him! But I remain sceptical as if everything in life could be fixed with `Actimal and Vitamins' then we would have no need of doctors. I have had 2 MRI scans over a period of 20 years. I have various points of damamge and also my fingers play up daily as well as having damage to the kneck and spine. I was in a car accident first, then developed Fibro in the hight of summer in july - remember the sunshine and vitamins ?-and was basically bed-ridden for 3 weeks, in terrible pain, that felt I was being eaten alive! It started when my hands woke me up at 2 in the morning and spread like wild fire, like a virus. We will see......? Heather xxx

You can't get a dynamic MRi on the NHS and would struggle to get one privately. They're just not done widely.

Vitamin B12 levels (or pernicious anaemia test) and Vitamin D levels are basic blood tests your GP can order...many aren't aware however that the serum test for vitamin D is so easy.
I run FibroAction, a small national charity raising awareness of Fibromyalgia Syndrome. I am not a qualified healthcare professional. If you would like medical references for any facts quoted, just PM me.

im sorry to say this but mri's are only usually done if the person asking for them feels that you may have something that may require surgery or for something to be diagnosed such as tumours etc that cannot be seenn on xray or other scans, as the mri is a very deeper scan than the others.

as for the vit d, yes it can help with some people who have been found out by testing etc that they have a vit d defiency. but it is not the answer to everyone and we shoul dnot just go out an dstart taking these vit d tablets. as there can be the fact that you can become over indulged with vit d and im sure that can cause problems as well.

we should talk this through with our gps and see what they feel after all they are the ones who are trained afterall. otherwise if we could diagnose ourselfves we wouldnt need gps would we.

Thanks for all replies. Went to docs on Friday. B12- vitamin D- all fine. Pernicious anemia and hyperthyroid tests- all Fine.
Suggest hypnotist as one of her bullimic patients went and now she is fine.

What the H*** sort of response is this. IS IT ME :banghead: :pcsmash:

I didn't have a vitamin D deficiency when fibro symptoms started, 3 years later and I now do but have monthly Vit D injections at the moment and no change.

From what I have read, if someone was suffering from chronic pain before, vitamin D isn't going to have much of an effect but if someone is suffering pain because of deficiency then vit D supplementation would obviously help.

I have had severe vitamin D deficiency for over a year now.. i have been on twice daily prescribed tablets and two monthly injections with no change.. i go outside when i can too.. my doctor today said shes putting me on a weekily tablet of 50,000iu to see if that helps but nothing seems to help so far..

The pain doesnt seem to lessen when i have injections so i dont think the Vitamin D problem is related to my pain, i have thyroid problems and i am on levothyroxine for it and my thryoid level is now stable.. i have blood tests every two months to see if there is any change.. but the vitamin D level is always low..

I did some research and found out that sometimes Gabapentin can cause low Vitamin D levels but i have been off of Gabapentin since December and i had a blood test a couple of weeks ago and my Vitamin D level is still low.. so that theory is wrong.. at least with me anyway.

I havent had any CT scans or anything though..

hi sophie i wasnt saying that that was what you was saying. nor was i meaning anything about what you put in dividually. i just meant in theory people read on websites like this and others that perhaps there might be a link to vit d and tehn they go straight out and get said vitamins etc . but in the long run it can cause other probs. it is always better to get it checked out properly. that is all i meant.
