Fibromyalgia - The Musical

Postby Gill Mc » Sat Mar 27, 2010 11:00 am

Hello all. Somebody posted recently with an idea for a situation comedy featuring a group of people with fibromyalgia living together. Great idea. It inspired me to take this a step further, Fibromyalgia, the musical. Have made a start and you can preview the opening scene below. I do hope that this doesn't offend anyone, and can I apologise in advance for the crack about support groups, I've not been to one yet and know nothing about them, but I'm sure I will. Anyway, see what you think. Further contributions very welcome! Sorry for the long post but hopefully will make you laugh.

Fibro Myalgia - The Musical

Curtains open, the scene is a large branch of a well know chain of chemists shops. Customers , with Fibromyalgia are browsing the shelves in the hope of finding something that may give them some relief from any of their diverse and unpredictable systems. Products being perused include, oils and lotions, potions, food supplements, hot pads, cold pads, herbal remedies, aromatherapy oils, relaxation tapes, exercise dvds, anything really. One woman is waiting at the pharmacy for her prescription to be filled. The pharmacist informs. her that her item is not in stock

Cast, costume notes etc.
Cast of twenty four people. with fibromyalgia. These will be predominantly woman in a certain age range but can, and maybe should include those of both sexes and those that fall outside the prescribed age range. Bear in mind that fibromyalgia can affect people of any ethnic origin.

Cast of twenty four is necessary to try to ensure the attendance of at least twelve at each performance and takes into account the half dozen that will not be able to make it and a few that forget to check their diaries.

Costume will be varied, there may be some chorus members wearing dressing gowns, but give them a break, they’re out of bed! Some one may well wear an extravagant costume and possibly overdo the make up just a tadge. She is probably the person in the most pain. Most people will appear to be completely normal.

Chorus will perform a dance routine during the song, each according to their abilities and inclination that day. Chairs may be used for support in a variety of creative ways. One person will be having a good day and perform a spirited solo, executing proficient leaps and arabesques. She will pay for this by being unable to walk the next day and will not be available for any performances for the following week. This is not necessarily a problem, this part will be interchangeable between all cast members. This also applies to singing of solo verses, whoever can be bothered can do it and , it can be shared with solo singers taking one verse each.

Lighting and volume levels should be moderate in order to accommodate those with sensitivity in these areas.

Song to the Tune of “Chim Chimmeny!”
( To be sung in a cod cockney accent , in the style of Dick Van Dyke.)
Note. The above is an artistic suggestion and is not intended to exclude any regional or national accents or dialects . This song would work well with many different interpretations.)

(Chorus)
Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)
Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)

Co-coda mol, Co-coda mol , give them to me
They make me feel better, as happy can be.
They don’t make my limbs work, the pain is still there,
Co-codomal means that I don’t bloomin’ care.

Co-codomal cheers me when I’m feeling blue
Go and ask Mary, she poppin’ ‘em too.

(Much laughter and slapping of thighs from chorus.)

(Chorus)
Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)
Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)

“It’s fibromyalgia”, the specialist smiled.
“It’s prob’ly been brewin since you was a child”.
“It’s a bit of a bagger, there’s nowt I can do,
But don’t look so downcast, here’s a leaflet for you”.

“Be sure to come back if there’s somefing I’ve missed,
It won’t be this year there’s a long waiting list.

(Hands on hips, nodding and murmurs of agreement from chorus.)

(Chorus)
Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)
Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)

Dear old Amytriptiline sends me to sleep
It’s true the next morning I feel I could weep
The old man’s disturbed by my moaning and shakes
Never mind ducks. It’s not me who’s awake.

Then each day at cock-crow we both feel like hell,
If it goes on much longer, he’ll need some as well.

(Chorus)
Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)
Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)

Our conjugal rites are not when now but if..
My libido might stir if I wasn’t so stiff.
He kindly refrains from saying I’m frigid
Ee‘s lost all ‘ope, and I lie there rigid.

Should I go down the chemists to buy me a pack
Of the new herbal, female aphrodisiac?

(Chorus)
Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)
Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)

Life’s not what it once was, me memory’s shot
There was something else but I’ve gone and forgot.
There’s a fibro support group in my neighbourhood,
With the strength for a night out, I’d go somewhere good.

But we gotta keep smiling, we can’t let things slip
With stiff arms, stiff arse, and a stiff upper lip.

(Chorus make various self congratulatory and supportive gestures amongst themselves.)

Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)
Co-coda mol (bom, bom, bom)

Etc Etc……………………..

Thanks guys. I wondered if I could do a tie in with Fibrofarm, the soap opera. Do let me know if you have any ideas for story lines, songs to mess about with, anything!!!!! There is another song in process. Not quite the barrel of laughs that co-codomal is (in a dark way). Cos it's not always funny, is it? Its a morning scene with a partner who's not all that helpful, but I'm sure we've alll had mornings like it however supportive people are. As I say, it' has it's amusing moments in a grim way but a bit close to the bone. What do you think? I would hate to upset anyone.

I wrote a poem about fibro so will pop that on for all to see (probably not as good as this but it may ring true to you all !!)

Possibly at the end of the first act there should be a solo performance, dimmed lights, hero/heroine at the front of the stage with a spot light on them, pleads to the audience for compassion and understanding and sings that well known Disney take on the A A Milne storys... 'I Could Spend A Crappy Morning Feeling Poo'
