Experiences of rheumys seems to vary as much as our own experiences with FM. As a very, very general idea, when you go for your appt, you will probably be asked about your pain, how it affects you, and any other symptoms etc. :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: the rheumy will carry out the tender point test which will help indicate where you have the sore points to indicate FM. Based on what happens with these kind of things, you may be referred for any additional tests/scans the rheumy thinks necessary, or you could be referred to a pain clinic, suggestions could be made regarding treatments and meds, or quite often you are simply referred back to your GP for treatment to carry on.

No doubt others will be along soon to add their experiences that might give you some more info. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a set system that they follow :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :dunno: :dunno:

hey

I saw mine in October and then again in Jan and will do again in May.

October - he mainly talked through my symptoms in detail. He then tested my reflexes etc and examined strength of my muscles etc. He then told me I didn't have muscular wastage, Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis and asked me to stand up for one last test. I'd discounted fibro as a possibility as my GP was convinced I had early stage Lupus and I knew he was about to do the tender point test. I got the shock of my life, it was so painful I was practically jumping away from him with some of them. He then said he was 99.9% positive I had fibro but as I have a family history of arthritis (osteo and ankylosing spondylitis) and because I'd had a malar rash he would run extra tests to completely rule out Lupus etc. He referred me for a blood test, an ultrasound of my hands and xrays of feet, hands and knees.

The blood test showed some anomalies (side effects of meds) which could also have indicated early onset of hepatitis which would also explain many of my symptoms so he ordered another set of bloods and ultrasounds of all internal organs below the heart.

January - the tests were all negative so he diagnosed me with Fibro and referred me for Physio and precribed amitriptyline.

In May we will review my Physio and the ami's.

I know I've been lucky and got one who is very thorough, I know some do send you back to the care of your GP but this one hasn't with me, maybe because he was concerned how quickly they'd told me I might have Lupus, or if not I definitely had an auto-immune disease and thought he was better placed to care for me? I now see a different GP to the one who thought I had Lupus (only saw her as an emergency) and new GP is excellent and is helping a lot with my care so I daresay May will be the last appointment. I think it depends on your symptoms - because there was always a small chance I might have something like Lupus due to the rashes my Rheumy decided to delay the formal dx to double check, with other people it may be much more obvious it's definitely fibro.

I was diagnosed only 2 weeks ago by the rheumy. Doc had sent me to rheumy as he thought it was rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumy asked lots of questions, poked me a lot and then told me it's fibromyalgia and said I would need to see my doc for amitriptyline and physio and to come back if things don't improve in 3 months.

I saw a rheumy at the beginning of December and was given a consultation and examination. I then had bloods taken and had a hip x-ray. Went back early Feb for results and got official diagnosis of fibro and OA in hips and sent on my merry way with a leaflet. Been referred back to my GP who is rubbish. So not very much really!

I had my first ever Rheumatologist appt a couple of days ago where I was given a diagnosis of hypermobility and fibro. She asked me loads of questions, wrote down notes about my history/symptoms, then proceeded to physically examine me (something I'm still recovering from) then told me I had fibro, explained what it was and what the NHS could do to help, gave me a leaflet, ordered more blood tests (GP had already tested for loads of different things) then sent me on my way with the promise of being referred to a hypermobility specialist physio

I first saw a rheumy in january. She asked a lot of questions to get a thorough history. She then proceeded to do the trigger point test (16 out of 18 were painful) she also assessed me for hypermobility (again I scored highly). I got referred for physio, blood tests (which came up with a lack of vitamin D), also she sent me for an x-ray and a tri-phasic (nuclear) bone scan both on my feet to investigate what's happening on my left foot (although it appears from her letter to the gp she thinks that it's crps). I'm to see her again in june.

i found mine to be very unhelpful
he told the nurse to get a fibro leaflet
i then started to ask about different things and all i got then
was its your condition!

he did order blood tests to be taken, and only found
out that i was being tested for lupus by the nurse
taking the bloods

he did prod and poke & yes felt like poking him back
i was discharged after first appointment.
my GP has been a lot more helpful

Hiya im new to this site, my GP says my problems are fibromyalgia and I have my first appointment with the rhumetologist in July. I'm really worried as iv been suffering pain throughout my body for years . Been tested for lupus, RA and had 2 brain scans for MS and so many blood test taken again all negative. I'm just tired of saying I'm tired and I hurt all over . Some days worse than others and could go a week without anything major going on . But recently I feel like I'm being set in cement, I find it hard to sit for long periods of time as I stiffen up, journeys are a complete nightmare, having to say stop the car and let me out, then struggle to actually get out. My worse day I think must be today I feel pain in every bone and muscle I just want to cry. Thanks for listening x god bless you all . X

Hi Jane
When you go to see the rheumy write down all your problems and all the questions you want to ask otherwise you will forget once you get in there.
Get someone to go with you as well as they can help take in the info the rheumy will be telling you. :goodluck1: keep us updated. :hugs:
